Hi, I just bought a new laptop with Windows 8.1. I know Windows 10 will be being released soon and I hear they're giving it away for free for a year for current 8 users.

Anyways I'm thinking about putting a solid state in my laptop. I would do this after the Win 10 released. If I made a back up of my current HDD could I use that to install the OS onto my SSD? Basically create a duplicate of my HDD. C drive, Healthy Recovery, etc.. And I don't have any installation disks of the sort.

Thanks

What you should be primarily concerned with is making a copy of your present system so that you will have a comprehensive backup of your entire system. So that if any disaster befalls your laptop's system, e.g., the laptop's drive fails or your OS becomes corrupt because one reason or another, you have the means at hand to restore your system to its previous functional state. Capiche?

Now you can easily achieve that objective through the use of a disk-cloning program. It's relatively easy to do with a number of freely available disk-cloning programs available on the net.

Now if creating that clone of your system results in some additional advantage to you when Windows 10 is finally released, that will be a double-advantage, won't it?
