Internet on my PC keeps dropping when I plug in my Wi-Fi router

I'm running 32-bit Windows 7 on my AMD Athlon desktop PC and I have recently bought a TP-LINK WR740N wireless router. Everything was okay until recently when I encountered a problem. My connection keeps dropping every few minutes when the router is plugged into the PC; when I disconnect the router and run the internet cable straight into the PC, everything runs smoothly.

Now, you'd think the router's broken, but here's the thing: Before this one, I owned a different router (exact same model, though) and after a few months I started having the same problem.

I am completely bewildered and frustrated, any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Did you install the drivers or software that came with the new router?

Edit: A possibility is that there is something near your router that is causing interference with your connection. Check if there are any wireless phones or things like a microwave near your router.
