Hi everyone.
Recently overclocked my CPU (i5 4690k). I started out slowly and started progressing. I got to 4.1 MHz, where the system is stable, but I can't go any further, as my CPU is already at 80 degrees celcius when stress testing with Prime95.
Now, while I was assembling my computer, I thought that I might have put on too much thermal paste, but decided to proceed (probably wasn't a good idea). Could this be due to too much thermal paste? - Or could it just be a bad CPU?
My CPU cooler is the CM Hyper 212 EVO.
Thanks in advance!

Reapplying thermal paste is a quick fix and not a bad idea. Power down, unplug and remove your EVO. Then pop off the processor and clean it and the EVO with Isopropyl Alcohol [as pure as you can get, 50% or better is fine]. You only need enough thermal compound to "paint" the processor.

My personal experience with Prime95 beyond version 26.6 and more recent Intel processors (beyond Sandy Bridge) are that the AVX instruction sets that Prime95 uses heat the processor up more than anything you would encounter outside of the program.
Hitting 80c during the a stress test (Usually a sudden spike in temperatures after 5 or so minutes, as I recall) is to be expected even with correctly applied thermal paste.
If you do want to test stability, I would suggest moving away from Prime95 and other synthetic tests and running games like Battlefield 3/4 or GTA V, or perhaps running Folding@Home - there is a client for the Chrome browser.

*My 4790k hits 95c with small FFTs... eeek!
