PC rebooting randomly (while playing games or not)

Hi everyone,

I'm posting here because I recently got a new GPU, the ASUS Radeon R9 285 Strix DirectCU II OC 2GB (http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/?gid=2632&graphics=Radeon%20R9%20285%20Asus%20Strix%20OC%202GB%20Edition) to run Grand Theft Auto V better but after doing so I'm experiencing random reboots while in-game but not only.

Sometimes it actually happens a bit after I start the PC (Windows doesn't even load) but it also happens after loading Windows and getting to the Desktop so I think game-only issue is obviously out of question, and so is high temps of CPU/GPU since the PC is still cold at those times.

A friend of my father came over and updated the BIOS, but I'm still getting the reboots. The next thing he said to do is to try and see if it happens with the last non-beta drivers AMD released (the non-optimizated GTA V drivers) and if that doesn't solve it, to put the old card back and see if it happens.

It's not a Windows error either since I disabled (on the Control Panel) the Windows auto-restart if an error occurs but I kept having the reboot, not any kind of BSOD.

My specs are:

Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU: AMD FX 6300 3.5GHz Six Core with stock cooler and not OC (http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/?pid=1146&cpu=FX-6300)
RAM: 8GB
GPU: ASUS Radeon R9 285 Strix DirectCU II OC 2GB
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 EVO R 2.0
PSU: 1Life 600W 120MM (http://www.game-debate.com/psu/index.php?ps_id=1504&psu=%201Life%20ps:jet%20600W)

I suspect of my PSU because I have been told by most people on GTA Forums (I have asked the same question there: http://gtaforums.com/topic/794939-pc-rebooting-suddenly/) that it might be a PSU-related problem and that this PSU, despite being rated 600W, is from a weak brand and therefore might not be able to sustain the GPU.

I previously had an ASUS Radeon HD 7790 DirectCU II 1GB (http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/?gid=1747&graphics=Radeon%20HD%207790%20DirectCU%20II%20OC%20Edition) and never had this kind of problem before.

I'd like to know the community's opinion about this issue that has been annoying me since the day I bought this new GPU in hopes of getting more out of GTA V.

Thank you all in advance.

Hi there Hugo_Agante,

Have you tried reseating your GPU?

Apart from that, I would also say that you need to update(you can uninstall the old ones and do a clean install of the new ones as well) your GPU drivers.
Another thing you can do is to reset the CMOS: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS

If the issue persists, then I guess you need to check whether your PSU is causing this. Unfortunately, the easiest way to do so is to just borrow a PSU from somebody and install it on your system.

Cheers,

I didn't try to reseat the GPU but I have all the latest GPU drivers installed.

I'll leave that CMOS thing for my father's friend to check because I ain't a computer expert and I don't want to ruin everything. He will try and see if the issue persists with the previous drivers (the non-beta ones) and if that also doesn't work he might reseat the GPU or in the extreme case, having to replace the card with the old one again. It can be faulty hardware.

I think he has a PSU he can borrow us to see what happens but that's the last thing to do.

But honestly, I think the issue will still persist after doing that to the CMOS, downgrading the drivers or reseating the GPU. I know I might be wrong but it's just my guess. I also think replacing the GPU for the old one will solve this as I never had problems with it.

This is a problem of the GPU itself (faulty hardware or drivers problem) or a GPU/PSU problem but only with the 285, not the 7790 as I never experienced this with that card so I think BIOS/CMOS issue wouldn't be the case, but we never know. Yet, we will be looking at all possibilities.

Thanks for your reply!
