Hey everyone. So I woke up this morning after letting my computer run Folding at Home while I was asleep and (assuming my computer was asleep) wiggled the mouse to get the display to come back on. Nothing happened. Computer is still on, fans running etc but nothing it being output to the display

The first time this happened (I don't remember if it was a result of Folding or not) I just put my gpu in the 2nd PCI-E slot, reinstalled the drivers and continued gaming etc deciding I would warranty the board when I wanted to xfire/sli

Now that the 2nd PCIE slot it doing the same thing and I'm stuck. Here's where I'm at

1. Boots w/o GPU, monitor plugged into the mobo and desktop shows
2. Boots w/ xfx 290 reference in PCIE1 but no display at card. Driver disc does no detect any XFX products
3. Does not boot w/290 in PCIE2 and I get mobo board beep 1 long, 3 short which as far as I can work out means "Conventional/extended memory failure" or "Video Card not detected"

4. Boots a Windforce 280 in PCIE2 but no display at card or board
5. Put the 290 back in and got the same mobo beeps
6. At some point in this process the retention clip in PCIE1 broke so I don't think I can really rely on putting anything in there any more

System Specs
z87 gryphon
4670k
hyper 212 evo
Crucial m550 boot drive
XFX r9 290 reference
EVGA 500 watt PSU
Corsair Vengeance 16g 1600mhz

I don't OC the card for Folding but I do for gaming

So do you think it's the PCIE slots or the card(s)? Please let me know if you need any more info

500 watts is low for a 290 card, if that is b1 or g1 series EVGA psu then it is possible the capacitors is too worn down.
It is also possible to be the board.
Not likely it is a GPU problem since both of them had the same no boot issues.

You will need to test your PC with a different PSU in it and/or with a less power demanding GPU.
If you cant borrow a different PSU or GPU then you will have to take it to PC repair shop to bench test it.

The 280 windforce uses 50 watts less than the 290 and the computer boots (hear windows start up) but neither the card or mobo will output to the display which is what pointed me towards a mobo issue.

Everything works fine w/o a gpu (except crysis)

If I had a 3rd gpu i'd try that out however I'm not really convinced it's power related. If the PSU couldn't provide enough juice then why would everything have run fine for the last 5 months?

The first issue was about a month ago (after the 290 had been installed for about a month) when PCIE1 stopped outputting to the display. Put the card in PCIE2, reinstalled drivers and was off to the races until PCIE2 seemed to stop working. And before that I had 4 months of flawless oc'd windforce 280 performance. Now after having issues with the 290, I also can't get the 280 to work as well.
