Hi

I live in the UK and need a new computer. My 11 year old XP3000, has been struggling for a while with new programs and my needs are changing. I have spent the last few days understanding what has changed in the last 10 year since I built a computer and I am getting up to speed but I still have much to learn.

Budget
My budget not including monitor and keyboard/mouse would ideally be less than £500.

PSU
I have a new boxed Corsair CX750M so if that is suitable for this new build, the budget can be used elsewhere

CPU
I was again looking at AMD because of cost savings: specifically FX6300, FX6350, ..FX8350. A local shop has a new unused FX6300 for £75 and a new unused FX8350 for £112 so maybe these are good options? What would be better for my needs? I have learned that Intel are leaving AMD behind, but from what I have read an AMD FX might still suit my budget and needs better when considering price. I am open to Intel options, and if money was no option I would go Intel, but I must stick to the budget. I understand the FX 8350 is more power hungry than the Intel CPU's but presumably 125W is what the CPU draws at maximum power? I have heard people complain about the noise of the stock cooler with the FX-8350 but is that true of all stock coolers? Will a good case with back and top cooling prevent such a noise from the stock cooler? I want to avoid spending unnecessary money whever possible because I am old, skint and disabled!

Case
I could do with some case suggestions. I don't need a case with a window (but it isn't a deal breaker) and I like the idea of bottom mounting PSU's and a top fan mount. Good things to like yes? I don't want the thing to be too noisy but I suppose I can use some of my 3 or 4 pin resistor cables to slow things down if need be. I liked the Cooler Master 452 because of the sound dampening but it doesn't have a top fan. I also liked the Antec GX300. Some of the Corsair cases also looked nice. Any £50 case suggestions welcome.

Ram
I understand that I don't need to obsess too much about RAM speeds, because I have read differences are negligible between say 1600 and 2000 since timings are more important, but I understand that the FX-8350 supports a max of 1866? SO would I be better off buying 1866? I guess I need 16GB?

Sound
I have an ten year old 24bit MAudio PCI soundcard that it would be nice to save and reuse, and I understand that a lot of MB's still have 1 or 2 PCI sockets. However if the motherboard comes with a decent sound section like the MSI gaming 970 and/or SPDIF toslink optical output then I could just run the MB sound output into an external SMSL DAC that I own.

Storage
I want an SSD card big enough for Windows 7 or 8 (which is better?) and the programs mentioned above (120-240gb?) and a regular 1-3TB HDD for extra space.

Intended Use
I am not really an avid game player but I do like to play a new and old games sometimes. I mainly intend to use the new computer mostly to play music and watch movies, and I am hoping to spend the next year learning programs like Solidworks, Pro-Engineer and Adobe Photoshop and Drupal/Dreaweaver. I don't want to get a workstation graphic card yet though, for the moment I would prefer something fast but an all-rounder. I often like to have a lot of windows open and I like to stream movies. A Samsung Plasma 43in 1024 x 768 will be my main monitor for movies but I will use an additional monitor for computer work and I want the ability to switch between them or have both on.

I am still unclear about many things. Is PCIe-3 something I need to worry about? I understand that AMD FX doesn't support it like Intel. Also, are the 990 motherboards compatible with the FX CPU's like the FX 6300 and FX 8350? Or will I be better going for a 970- type motherboard? Like I said, I am still reading and learning and filling in a ten year gap in experience. I am also knocking on a bit so be gentle with me, I'm an old man!

Sorry for length of post. Please help and advise if you have the time. Thank you. Hope I get some help. Help me OB 1 Kenobe!

Thank you for that rapid answer, I will look at those items immediately. Would the very low £112 for the FX-8350 still make it unnecessary as an option compared to a 6300? Thank you. Looking at your suggestions now.

Have I put this question in the right section? Remember I am an old guy. An old engineer, but old all the same.

I am really gratefull for your help i7baby.. blooming heck how cheap are optical drives? I have 2 decent DVD writers already (one is a new external LG USB DVD writer - any good?) currently not in use though so again more money can go elsewhere...

Also, I have already got a legit copy of Windows 7 64 bit that a friend didn't want any more.

I must admit I am still confused about differences between 970 and 990 MB chipsets.

OK - all you said was you had a PSU. I can do again with no OS or ODD and for 600 quid -

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor (£130.56 @ Amazon UK)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£24.97 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI 970 GAMING ATX AM3+ Motherboard (£74.99 @ Novatech)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory (£51.54 @ CCL Computers)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£51.49 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£38.34 @ Aria PC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card (£163.49 @ Amazon UK)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case (£59.98 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £595.36

- everything gets a bit better.

In my opinion, yes, especially since the FX-8350 is a lot stronger.

Thank you so much for your help?

What about 970 MOBO vs 990 MOBO?

And when graphic cards can use PCIe-3 (I presume none can yet?) will my FX-6300 or FX-8350 be able to do PCIe-3? Am I correct in thinking it would be down to the chips on the motherboard?

Hi

After all my reading and literally driving myself nuts, but getting up to speed after ten years since I last built a PC... I have totally changed direction..

I wanted to go with AMD, I have always gone with AMD..

But after weighing up motherboard choices (and prices), power consumption, etc, I have decided to go with Intel instead. Sure I'll be paying more for a 4590 or 4690 processor than an 8320 or 8350, but electricity in the UK where I live works out to roughly 30p per kw/h. From what I understand an 8320 or 8350 would likely cost me an extra £5-10 per month in electricity compared to the Intel?

Just seems that there is more room for upgrading, don't need to stress as much about the PSU, don't need a huge case, don't need to obsess about too many fans to keep it all coool...

I loved AMD, but it does sort of make sense to go Intel at the moment huh?

The 4690 and 4690K is about £25-30 more expensive than a 4590.. is there much difference?

Also, what would be a suitable motherboard? H97? Z97?

Thanks ibaby. I know you have put a lot of effort into helping me, and it must be frustrating.

Budget slightly increased, got some things to sell on ebay to go to budget.

I can get Intel i5 4690k new for £165 with a voucher I just got from Amazon. Good?

I like the look of that Asus Z97. I like the idea of electrolytics (particularly Elna) for the audio output on the mb. But might I find an M2 slot useful as prices come down or will I not notice much difference to a sata driven SSD?

I need a good big monitor to run in conjunction with my 43in plasma. I can't spend more than £200 on the monitor. The plasma is only capable of 1024 x 768 and it will be useful for movies and browsing/email etc. But the monitor is where I will use and learn solidworks/drupal.

I am going to get the Corsair 300r case £60 Amazon
I already have a Corsair CX750M PSU

The rest of your suggestions still a good fit I guess? Except like I said I have a legit win 7.

You think I'll have any problems using my old (2004) MAudio Audiophile in my new computer? No lags or anything considering it is PCI? Just wondering whether that might still be a better bet than using the audio output of the mb.. then again I have a spare optical DAC and a Behringer ultramatch upsampler DAC.. so I have many sound options...

All change!

This is what I have so far because of bargains, deals, cashback, and strange wild amazon price changes etc.

i5 4680k CPU
Asus Z97 Pro WiFi AC MB
XFX 850 XXX PSU
MSI Radeon R9 270 2GB TWIN FROZR GFX Card
Corsair 300r case

I want a good CPU cooler, I am presuming the stock cooler isn't great. Is the Cooler Master 212 Evo a good choice for my CPU, MB and case?

Thanks
