Dear all,

My gaming PC is getting "old" and I want to build a new one. First off, I would like to state my current build and then the built I am thinking to buy. In the end I will finish my post with what has stopped me from pulling the trigger.

Current Build:

CPU: i7 2.6gh
GPU: Asus 660ti
Motherboard: P6T SE
Ram: Vengeance 4GB (x4) 1600mhz DDR3
Monitor: Benq 27', 1080, 144hz
Hard drives: samsung 250gb ssd & 2TB (not sure what tech)
Case: generic mid tower

Build I want to buy: Cost £750 (GBP)

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K CPU (Quad Core 4GHz, Socket H3 LGA-1150)
GPU: Gigabyte Geforce G1 970 GTX
Motherboard: Mod 1150 ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Hero ATX Motherboard
Case: ZNXT phantom full tower

Monitor: Benq 27', 1080, 144hz (Will keep from the old PC)
Ram: Vengeance 4GB (x4), 1600mhz, DDR3 (Will keep from the old PC)
Hard drives: samsung 250gb ssd & 2TB (Will keep from the old PC)

My problem with this build is, that the Z97 does not support DDR4 and the new I7 5xxx series. But the price difference between the two technologies is £300(GBP), while the performance boost is minimal to non-existent.

I would like to ask you, if you think that Z97 and DDR3 will become obsolete in 2-3 years, and I would have to upgrade again.

Thanks in advance

p.s Apologies for the wording, I'm at work and very confused.

not obsolete. there are still a full gen + refresh due to come out for the z97 platform.... the ddr4 + 5 series are enthusiast platforms. more reliable, more expensive. ddr4 may come to later boards with the next gen of socket 1150 cpu's... it wont be main stream for a couple of years, let alone required.

I agree its not obsolete... not yet anyways... Plus the performance is great.. you wouldn't really feel the need to upgrade so soon with the normal tasks people do these days, including gaming...

Looking at your system I would recommend you get at least 8GB... some games want to use up to 4-6 gigs of ram... and if you only have 4... only about 3 gigs of that are usable since windows and other apps need ram too...

just upgrade your ram and cpu no need to change everything

i dont think so because when i7 comes its too expensive than other cpu and intel will also do the same trick with skylake

point is that his current rig is not bad and upgrading to current gen Z97 will not give a glorious boost in performance.

might as well save some more, wait for LGA 1151, get DDR4 RAM, and probably the AMD 3xx series or Fury. :)

yes possibly you are right but i still think that skylake made for less power consumption and less heating i think its speed will be similar to i7 5th generation 4.5 to 5.5 Ghz
