hi there.
Last night I was using my pc's wifi no problem upstairs. I then brought the pc downstairs to its normal location on the same floor as my router. When I hooked it all back up again, there was a red x over my wifi signal next to my desktop clock. It also says no network connections are available which isn't right - it normally shows 8 or 9. My router is fine as my phone and ps4 connect with no issues.

I've looked in device manager and it says my WLAN PCIe card is working fine but there is an error over the Microsoft Virtual WiFi mini port adapter - 'the device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers for this device (code 31).

I am using windows 7 64 bit on a dell xps studio 8100
14gb ram
I7 860 2.8ghz
Asus GeForce 970 OC

Solution
Try disabling the virtual wifi mini-port driver.

If that does not work try this: uninstall your WLAN card driver and then tell it to scan for new hardware and let it reinstall the driver.

Thank you very much for your response. I have now tried your suggestions. Nothing happened after your first suggestion. After reinstalling the WLAN card I got a BSOD and restarted my pc. After restarting, my wifi logo had the yellow star logo - I clicked it and saw my router connection but it disappeared and now the wifi logo is back to just a red x saying there are no connections available.

I have also tried a system restore but this made no difference. I have also checked the hardware to make sure it's in place which it is. Both of the green lights next to the 2 antennae are on.

Edit: now it finds my router (no other connections which is unusual) and I can click connect, but when I enter my password it spends a few seconds trying to connect then says windows was unable to connect.

Troubleshooting doesn't help.

If it is not possible to use Ethernet (as hardwired will always be better then wifi) then I would either get a new wifi card as that one seems to be faulty, or better yet get a powerline network adapter to send Ethernet data over powerlines, You can get an av500 kit from tp-link for around $35 on amazon. Real world speed is 70-80mbps transfer which is what you get from N600 in the same room as the router.
