Hi all,

7 months ago, I posted this asking if my build was good. After some advice and revisions, it was perfect for what I wanted. It is 7 months later, the prices have come down, and I want to pull the trigger this week on ordering it. Basically, I want to know if it is perfect still. Technology moves so fast, and I just want to know if I'm making any stupid decisions. For example, I'm going with Haswell-E and X99 and DDR4, cause I figure this will future-proof me enough if I need to upgrade in the future. But I also don't want to end up with a socket that busts and ends up being abandoned.

So if anyone has any comments or advice, bring it on.

Some bullet points that come to mind:
  • I chose a GTX 970 because the benchmarks didn't show much real-world improvement over a 980, so the price-performance ratio is way better. Also, from what I hear, NVidia still edges out AMD in graphics cards. I figure I can just get another 970 a little bit down the line and have a really powerful machine. However, in terms of which brands to go for with graphics cards, I'm always lost.

Same goes for the motherboard.. I chose a compatible one with a good amount of USB 3.0 ports. I have used ASUS and ASRock in the past, so I trust those, but am open to suggestion.

I chose 16 GB of RAM because I wasn't sure if 32 was overkill, but I am really debating whether or not I should just go for 32.

Also not sure if I should pay the premium for the Samsung SSDs, or if I won't notice a difference with the Crucial. If paying a premium for a Samsung Pro isn't worth it, I figure could spring for a 512 instead of 256.

Should I go liquid cooling? If so, any good recommendations on a liquid cooler? It would be my first time going that route.

Thanks again to everyone on this forum who donate their time to being so helpful. I can't say that enough.

Greetings deaf to light,

I'd go this way:

If it's above Your budget, what You chose is good, just avoid Seagate, and get that watercooler.

+1

This is a better build, and some of hte added expense is from the addition of the case, which your original build doesn't have.

I already bought one of those Thermaltake GT cases a few months back, which is why I don't have a case included.

So the impression I'm getting is definitely go water cooling... I heard great things about the Corsair h100 gt... but didn't see it in your guys' builds.
One of you said go Crucial 500 GB, but others are saying the Samsung 850 Pro is definitely worth it.
I can stick with the EVGA graphics card? I read some speculation on PCPartpicker's forums that EVGA's 900 series cards weren't that great, but it could just be one dude's opinion. 750W is okay, since I don't plan on going further than 2-way SLI down the line...

My main concerns now are whether or not to get 32 GB of RAM, and whether or not I should be looking at a different mobo... there are so many to choose from, many with the same or extremely similar features.

Also,
uplink-svk: Memory: *G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2800 Memory ($164.99 @ Newegg)
Any particular reason for Corsair over G. Skill?

Thanks for all your help. The last two things I'm stuck with is the video card and whether or not I should go for 32GB of RAM. I heard some things about EVGA's 900 series having problems with the fan. Unfortuantely, I always used EVGA cards in the past because of they were always given high praise, so I'm not too sure if I should be looking towards another brand now.

The 32GB of RAM would raise the price significantly but may be good for my other uses for the machine such as Pro Tools and Photoshop. I'd love to just put the 16 in now and upgrade later, but upgrading isn't as easy when you're supposed to get the exact same RAM a year down the line. Plus, the only kits I can find in either 16 or 32GB are 4x. I can't find a kit that I could have 2x16 now and 2x16 later... If I did 16 now, I would end up with 8x32GB RAM down the line, which seems like a lot of stress on the memory controller.

I updated my part list as well:

I just don't understand why you can get 4X8 GB for a 32GB kit, but you can only get 4x4GB for a 16GB kit. If I could get 2X8GB, I would gladly get that now and then purchase the same kit down the line to upgrade to 32GB if necessary, and be safe because it would be the exact same RAM.

[strike]I just bought 5820K last week. I had decided on this after a lot of research, but now that Intel's new Broadwell is released, should I reconsider?
[/strike]

Never mind, I just realized the new Intel Broadwell series really just adds better integrated graphics... which is kind of silly when you think most high end systems have discrete graphics cards anyway.
