Witcher 3 - Minimum power supply wattage for GTX 970 SLI vs 980 SLI

I just obtained Witcher 3 and need to purchase a video card. My power supply in my Dell Precision Tower 5810 is only 685 watts. Will that allow me to run either GTX 970s or 980s in SLI? My specs are:

Intel Xeon Processor E5-1620 v3 (4C, 3.5GHz, Turbo, HT, 10M, 140W).
32 GB DD4 RAM (16 GB DIMMs x 2)
Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB x 4 (RAID 0)
Dell UltraSharp U2412 (1920 X 1200 res) x 2 monitors
NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 310 512MB (! hence why I'm upgrading my video card).
* FYI: I may install a Intel 750 NVMe 400 GB SSD, but should just barely have enough slots to install that card since it's only requires a PCIe x4 slot.

Feel free to offer any recommendations outside of my direct question and thanks in advance for your input.

You could probably sqeeze by in sli. But if your going to be in 1080p its overkill. So if you go sli, I would probably go to a 800w but if you decide to go with one 970/980 its fine.

Hi Randy,

I agree that it's probably overkill. I'd like to have the option of upgrading to 1440 gaming down the road. Also, I watched Joker's YouTube video for 1080 gaming, and he showed how 970s in SLI blew a single 980 out of the water (links below). Ideally I'd prefer to stick with the standard Dell power supply in this machine if possible. I'd like the option of SLI because if I couldn't do so, then I'd have to consider financing a new build, and money is too tight for that right now.

Single GTX 970 should be enough for almost all games to run 1080p/60fps at high to ultra settings. There are some exteme cases like GTA V and Witcher 3, where you can't reach ultra settings.

If you think about using sli, then why not considering a single higher class gpu like the new GTX 980 Ti? Its better to have single card than multiple, as it should consume less power and there is no question if game supports multiple gpu.

Edit: but for 1080p this is overkill. If you plan to upgrade to 1440p and if later games need more gpu power, then GTX 980 is enough.

TurboPixel, I will purchase a single GTX 980 Ti and call it a day. I'm simply waiting for nVidia to refresh their inventory. Thanks for your recommendation. The idea of playing Witcher 3 in uber settings, in 1080p, has me drooling. Technically I have two Dell 24" monitors that do 1920 x 1200 resolution. I never intended to use more than one monitor for gaming, but with a 980 Ti, I suppose that I could.
