TP Link WDN4800 recognised but not working (very strange issue)

Hi there,

I bought a USB wireless networking dongle three days ago, got it home, didn't work for my machine so I sent it back for a full refund. My OS is Windows 8.1.

Instead, I did the better thing for a desktop PC and bought a TP Link WDN4800 WLAN card.

Popped it in the PCI Express slot and turned the machine back on, installed the drivers and utility, nothing.

The light on the back of the card is on, it intermittently blinks (every 5-7 seconds) and Windows recognises it in the device manager as a "TP-LINK Wireless PCI Express Adapter".

According to the documentation for the card located here (figure 2-10) I should be greeted with that window with a list of all the wireless connections available.

Instead, I'm not, I'm greeted by this window (figure 3-27). The difference is, none of the other four tabs are clickable (Status, WPS, Network, Profile) and there's only one option on the advanced window to select the adapter. The adapter appears, and is selected, yet the program does not allow me to do anything else.

So I figured that it was something wrong with the utility, uninstalled that and reinstalled just the drivers to use Windows' own system to join a network. No joy here either. When I click "Change Adapter Settings" four options come up:

  • Ethernet
    Lahiverkkoyhteys (LAN in Finnish)
    VPN - VPN Client
    WLAN 2

The bottom adapter is the card in the PCIe slot. I've tried various combinations of these disabled and enabled (i.e. having the Ethernet enabled and disabling the VPN client or vice versa) to no joy.

I switched the slots of the PCIe on the motherboard and they had exactly the same outcome - both working in each slot.

I tried unplugging the D drive from the machine and leaving just the C drive (the SSD). No joy either.

I disabled all anti virus programs, Windows Firewall and ESET NOD32 and found this wasn't the problem either.

I've also tried four different system restore points, all within the last two weeks, with no luck either. The first restore point didn't work (the actual restore didn't restore) and the other ones didn't.

I tried various ipconfig and winsock commands in cmd that I'd looked up on various other help sites which didn't work either.

I've tried too many things to list here, honestly, I've exhausted all options and I'm totally out.

Thanks.
