I bought a cubietruck, and I think it can only power through sata. It says it only handles 2.5" drives anyway. Can someone please recommend a hdd, or tell me what I am misinterpreting. I don't want to have to externally power it. Thanks and let me know if you need any more info.

Hi,

The company has multiple products so it would have helped to link to the EXACT product.

Anyway...

1) If the device has an AC adapter you use that.

2) If it doesn't then you would need POWER in the form of eSATA since a normal SATA data cable does not have power.

3) Some devices connect via USB2 or USB3 which does supply power, and they may have a USB->SATA converter unit.

*Long story short, follow the INSTRUCTIONS.

Other:
If buying an HDD separately, why not just buy a 2.5" USB device that is already complete? The cost of most USB HDD's versus buying the HDD only (no case) is usually pretty small.

Thus, not sure what benefit this "Cubietruck" would have.

For example, this is a 1TB HDD, 2.5", USB3 unit on sale for $60 USD:

$70 for a 1.5TB unit: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-1-5TB-Portable-External-STBX1500401/dp/B00R49FAZK/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1432259798&sr=1-4&keywords=2tb+2.5%22

$85 for a 2TB unit: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-STBX2000401-2-5-Inch-Portable/dp/B00ILALU9G/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1432259798&sr=1-1&keywords=2tb+2.5%22

it can only take a sata drive, it cannot boot from a usb drive. its a cubietruck. aka a cubieboard three. and it came with a cable that looks like this. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-P6invJXYidOTJaV2hENE9fOENpM0lBUVp4VkNXb3JzbU4w/view?usp=sharing
it said it could only support 2.5" drives without external power. sorry, im not very good at this. Im better at plugging the cables that fit into the mobo and psu.

edit: i was thinking something like this might work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178125&cm_re=2.5%22_hdd-_-22-178-125-_-Product
