Looking to cut down cost on my build with a cheaper motherboard that is reliable because i heard motherboards dont matter a lot now. So what is a good reliable and cheaper motherboard that is very compatible with the gtx 980?

Solution
Well, since your not planning on OCing, you can save by not getting the best motherboards. However, with your budget, I wouldn't be getting a "cheap" board either. Even though the chipsets themselves are going to be similar(8 or 9 series Intel in your case), most boards set themselves apart w/ better quality components. Do you have a budget in mind for just the board itself? Any specific features, such as Wi-Fi onboard, Thunderbolt, USB 3.1, M.2, SATA Express, ect? Not sure if your adding a discrete soundcard, but the onboard audio is better on premium boards these days as the circuitry is isolated from other components creating better audio quality. On top of the added features like these, the components are rated for longer life...
Need some specifics on what you're trying to do with your build. Are you going with AMD or Intel? Do you plan on doing any overclocking? Which processor are you looking at as certain boards don't play nice with certain processors. Also what is your budget? Most newer motherboards will be physically compatible with and GTX 980 these days.

Thanks for the quick reply im going with an intel i7-4790. I plan on using this as a gaming only pc and i will not be overclocking. My budget is around 2000 but if i can get lower than that id love to.

I'm not trying to make a sales pitch, just trying to identify some options for expansion maybe down the road.
