Hello everyone,

I could really use some help with my new system build. I think I know what the problem is, but I'm not an expert and could use so more opinions or ideas.

A brief run down of what's happening:
When my gfx card is installed, system will do a sudden hard reboot after running benchmark tests in Windows for a few minutes or if I tilt my system to its side by about 15 degrees. There's no BSOD or any type of warning such as system beeps or fans running at a high RPM.
If I remove my the gfx card and start the system using the onboard video, the system runs fine.
After running system performance checks, benchmarks, and Memtest I've ruled out CPU and RAM problems. So at this point, I'm left thinking I simply got a lame GPU.

Components:
Mobo: ASUS Sabertooth Mark 1 / 3.1 USB
CPU: Intel i7 4790k (included heatsink/fan unit)
RAM: 16gb (8gb x 2) G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 4GB FTW+ 2.0+
PSU: EVGA 850w G2
HDD: Crucial 250gb SSD

Tests Run:

  • ■ Booting system with BIOS automatic overclock settings + GTX 970 installed and powered. FAIL - System crashes in Windows after a few minutes or while running benchmark tests. System continuously tries and fails to reboot after crash.
    ■ Booting system with BIOS default settings + GTX 970 installed and powered. FAIL - System crashes in Windows after a few minutes or while running benchmark tests. System continuously tries and fails to reboot after crash.
    ■ Booting system with BIOS default settings + GTX 970 installed but power cables detached. Attempting to boot system with onboard video. FAIL - System crashes in Windows after a few minutes or while running benchmark tests. System continuously tries and fails to reboot after crash.
    ■ Booting system with BIOS automatic overclock or default settings and GTX 970 not installed. SUCCESS - System boots and runs benchmarks successfully. I can even run the benchmark test in Dragon Age Inquisition at a blazing pace of 12FPS. :)

So, fellow enthusiasts, am I pretty spot on here with assuming I got a lame video card that's overheating and causing system crashes, or could it be something else?

Thanks for reading.

Good suggestion. I've been running the system for about 45 minutes now with the GTX 970 card in the 2nd PCI-e slot. Does this indicate there's a fault with the 1st PCI-e slot on the mobo?

Here are the temperature reading at different points.

Startup - Windows Idle:
CPU: 30°C
MoBo: 25°C
GPU: 28°C

PerformanceTest8 Benchmark - Idle on main screen with rotating 3D representation of system:
CPU: 58°C
MoBo: 29°C
GPU: 68°C (fans kick on at around 65°C and run around 750rpm)

PerformanceTest8 Benchmark - Full benchmark test:
CPU: 65°C
MoBo: 33°C
GPU: 77°C (fans running around 1550rpm)

Dragon Age: Inquisition Benchmark:
CPU: 30°C
MoBo: 25°C
GPU: 28°C
FPS: 60(min) 81(avg)

Current - Posting this message:
CPU: 28°C
MoBo: 32°C
GPU: 48°C
