I just received a Dell PowerEdge SC1420 from a friend. Is the sc1420 worth keeping or is it past it's time? What would you do with a PowerEdge, looking for any project ideas, might make it a website server or something. Any help is much appreciated!

Schalch12,

I was given a similar but previous series to your sc1420 server, a Dell Poweredge 2600 and faced a similar dilemma- what to do with it.

Along with the gift server were two computers from the same era, a Dell Precision 390 and Dell Dimension E520, plus a very nice plotter, an E-size (42") HP. The two desktops were surplus to need- I have several more recent workstations, but I made a game of upgrading them to as high a rating on Passmark for the smallest amount...

The two desktops were surplus to need- I have several more recent workstations, but I made a game of upgrading them to as high a rating on Passmark for the smallest amount of money.

Results for the two systems were better than expected, it was educational and inexpensive-a satisfying game. However, the price of these gifts was that I had to copy all the company's files from the Poweredge onto a USB drive. I made partition and file structure on the USB drive, thinking it would be easy as there was only 70GB of data. I set the Poweredge up in my office so I could watch it, but it was so extremely noisy, I had to put it- and monitor,K/B, and mouse in a bathroom down the hall and close the door. The file extraction took fifteen hours.

As I was contemplating the usefulness o fth ePoweredge, it seemed more and more obvious that I didn't really need it for work. If I wanted to link the systems I'm using, I could have file sharing via a local network. I have a lot of music media, but it's mostly on vinyl !, plus the server is so noisy, I couldn't use it at home.

Still, I do see a really use for th ePweredge and I'm going to keep it awhile, becuase of the educational value- I realized that if I need to learn enough about servers that by the time I really do need one for work, I'll know enough to be able to choose, configure, and set one up. Servers are going to filter into ordinary day-to day use further and further and I've learned wit software that by the time you really need it, it's too late to learn.

Everyone's goals and expeirence is differentt but I'd say turn it on and learn all you can about servers- you'll be dealing with them the rest of your life. If a use presents itself- and you have a place to isolate it from the noise, all the better.

Cheers,
