I came across an issue: will my MSI 970 need a BIOS update before I can install an AMD FX-8350 onto it? If it does, how can I update the BIOS?

Thanks in advance.

Solution

AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs. FX 8350 is a Vishera.

The above statement means you may need to update the motherboard you've selected with latest BIOS update for it to recognize and support the FX series processors..

In your case you cannot update the BIOS of the motherboard without installing the processor. So the option is to talk to your seller and request him to update the BIOS of the board. The seller may use a non-Vishera processor like the Phenom or Athlon which also the board supports, update the board BIOS and then ship it to you. For this seller may charge a bit or do it completely free. You can also...

I cannot tell. What is your mobo? I do not think you would need one but I need to know the mobo first.

You can also borrow a non-Vishera processor from any of your friends, update the BIOS, then swap that processor with the FX 8350, for the board to recognize the processor.

If you don't want to do any of those discussed above, consider this option, where no BIOS update required, no compatibility issues, everything will work out of the box:
