At the moment, I have a business modem from Comcast hard wired into my 24 port gigabit ethernet switch and have all of my 15 computers hard wired from that switch. Do I need a router to go in between the modem and switch or is that not exactly necessary? The modem is a gateway so it does have wifi capabilities, but I have it disabled since we use the internet for VoIP and Log Me In Rescue. We literally are just now getting this wiring set up as I type this, but would it be beneficial for me to purchase a different modem? We aren't running into problems right now with connectivity or voice quality, but I want to remain scalable and I have a feeling that the stock modem Comcast provided me isn't the best of the best (even though I pay ~$300 / month for their fastest business class speed)
Also, do I need a router at all since the office is hard wired? There might be some sort of firewall built in to the modem. Our switch is unmanaged. Any advice helps, I can't really seem to find if it is necessary to run modem > router > switch, or if modem > switch is fine for my needs.
