Two PCs combined 7.1 audio (switched)

I've just built yet another computer system, and my main PC has always had 7.1 driven from it using 4 3.5mm jacks off the motherboard connections, good enough for my needs anyway.

But now I want to have my setup so I can switch between either of the systems easily, and I'm a bit stumped.

You shouldn't combine audio inputs so that's off the list, then you can't by a switch (that I can find) that will take 2 lots of 4 stereo cables so that seems off the list.

So I though, I'll just use the SPDIF connections and use optical and get a cheap decoder....but can I find anyone selling a decoder for 7.1 ... NO!

My speakers are the Creative T7700, and I like them so don't want to buy anything new. A DTS-100 is as rare as hens teeth so that seems off the table.

I'm stumped, can it be this hard? I really don't want a hulking great AV receiver on my desk just to support two optical audio systems, but what other options do I have?

Any suggestions?

Hi
There's nothing to stop you combining the audio outputs from the computers to the input of the sound system by using splitter cables. The only problem would be that you cannot switch between them so would have to mute one of the computers at a time.
AFAIK SPDIF only supports up to 5.1 which is why you cannot get a 7.1 decoder.

Yeah, I'd only found 5.1 decoders so that would make sense. Muting is a solution of sorts, I would ideally have liked to mix the sources but that will cost some real money and I'm not doing that. So cheap and cheerful it is!
