lately, ive been thinking of getting rid of windows 7.. its been a while since ive done a fresh install and i feel this computer could use one.. but you know, it has me thinking, why go back with windows 7, why even upgrade to windows 8 or 10?.. why not go back to xp 64 bit or vista?

im not liking the newer crap windows seems to be bundling in their operating systems, dont really trust the microsoft company in general, however this is primarily a gaming PC and it seems im stuck with windows at least a little bit.. so just to be different, maybe squeeze a bit more performance out of it.. why not just go back to XP 64 bit or windows vista?.. all the hardware in this computer has drivers readily availble for either one.. so why SHOULDNT someone go back?.. its not like i care about M$ supprt or internet explorer

may even strip the user interface entirely out of windows XP and boot straight to steam big picture mode for a windows based SteamOS like system

Solution
well the thing is drivers now with vista like amd don't support it any more and if you manualy select amd cards driver for vista the latest they give you is from 13.12 . driver support is the only reason I got off it

example -- my motherboard don't show vista support as well

this forces you off your good old stuff and makes you buy there new stuff -

these days it not them that supports you its you need to support them

"may even strip the user interface entirely out of windows XP and boot straight to steam big picture mode for a windows based SteamOS like system", I think you should do this, but with windows 7/8.1. Current is current for a reason.

Win7/8.1 have better memory management than windows xp or (eww vista). They also boot faster, and don't need to be reboot nearly as often because "weird memory issues" that are common in older versions of windows. If you really want to use xp/vista keep in mind they are not supported and not being patched for known issues anymore.

It's a difficult question to answer without knowing your specs and how you use your computer in general. Windows 7 does better than Vista when it comes to RAM, Vista tends to hog it more. In my experience Windows 7 works roughly as fast with 2GB of RAM as Vista does with 4 GB RAM. Home networking is also easier to set up in Windows 7 than in Vista, if you have other computers. Generally I don't recommend XP. Although it requires much lower specs to run, statistics show that infections are more prevalent in PCs running XP than in those running Vista or above. It's not a very safe system. And when it comes to Vista over Windows 7, the latter wins on many fronts in my opinion. I have upgraded my HP G60 notebook to Windows 7 from Vista without a second thought, and predictably it ran, booted and updated itself much faster than it ever did with Vista.

if you use any thing from AMD you dang sure don't want to go back to vista [the reason I had to go to 7 ] last 2 vista supported vid card drives from them were 13,4 and 13,12 - NVidia I think your still ok and supported to date

P.S - I preferred vista over 7 by far

Admirable
1. Don't go back to xp
2. Vista is a resource hog
3. If you are a gamer, these two things above will not benefit you
4. Windows 10 will come out with a better directx for graphics
5.The start menu is back without the use of a third party program
6.Modern games will stop being compatible with windows 7 eventually
7.Have fun choosing

well everything I use works with xp or vista not everything I found will under 7 - I got some games and programs that just don't work under 7 but have no issues under xp and vista .. I hate to think what I will loose if I were to go to 8 or 10 - I will admit vista was a pain until it was completely updated and all service packs installed .. also a lot of venders droped supporting vista but still support xp ?

how hard can vista support be for them if they still do xp and 7 ?? anyway xp 0vista everything works fine , 7 not so

'' Vista is a resource hog'' ????
I got xp vista and 7 side by side on 3 boxes and I don't see vista ''hogging'' anymore then the others them issues were in its growing pains stage and resolved as it got patched a fully serviced packed and updated vista works well , dang well

well, im going to try windows vista again and see how it compares after using 7 for so long.. i have a 60gb 2.5" hdd i can insert into my tower with a dock built into the tower, so i can install to that and leave my current desktop untouched for the time being.. i think vista is the only true 64 bit NT6 system?
