Making a custom computer and selling it

My son wants to build a computer as a hobby, but he would need to sell it to build a second one. He plans to spend $600. My questions are:
Are these parts he chose compatible?
Can he actually sell this for $600 or more on ebay?
What operating systems should he put on there?

I'd agree, it's very hard to recover what you spend on building a system by reselling it. Most warranties are for the original purchaser only so it would essentially put the buyer in the position of spending the same amount of money for a system with no warranty and no guarantee it was put together properly. Not saying your son wouldn't, but the buyer has no idea and it's a roll of the dice for them. Buying as an individual at full retail means hardly any room for markup vs an outfit or oem that buys in bulk at deeper discounts on parts.

Think of it like a new car, soon as you purchase it and drive it off the lot, it loses value.

1. Right, if you can get those parts for 600 dollars that means so can anyone. Why would anyone pay 600 dollars for used parts when they can get brand new parts for the same price?
2. Is your son (or more accurately, you) going to warranty the work done? There are people who will pay a small premium for already assembled systems but generally speaking, they are going to expect to have some control over what goes in the system, and they will expect a guarantee\warranty on the work.
3. You will lose about 15% off the top of whatever you can get for it anyway (ebay fees, paypal fees, shipping and insurance fees).

It's a nice idea that your son wants to get into this hobby, but I think it is a bit unrealistic to expect random strangers to fund it.

10-15 years ago that would be a majory profitable business, however now everyone can build their own system. If someone is willing to spend money to buy a rig, they can invest about 2 hours into learning to build one themselves, in addition to all the points made above.
