GPU: MSI GTX 980 4gb
CPU: Intel i7-4790k
RAM: 16 gb
MOBO: MSI Z97 Gaming 7

This is my first build and I was wondering how well it would do currently and also how long it could potentially last me in the future before upgrading.

That build should play any current or older game with Ultra settings for the most part. Witcher 3 will require turning off hairworks probably, for Ultra, and GTA V seems to have random issues regardless of hardware, but for the most part there's really no Tier to move to beyond what you have without going to a dual GPU card and an X99 platform simply for the dual x16 that does have some relevance at 4K resolutions using a 295x2 or Titan X. My guess is that even at high settings you'd be amazed at how good these newer games are looking and the drop to high from Ultra will definitely boost rates. Most games will play at Ultra without breaking a sweat with that configuration at 1080p though and probably at high if you're not over 1440p.
Well, since there is no other single GPU single card solution that could be any better, it really doesn't matter. There's not much of anything you could increase in regard to performance aside from going with a dual GPU Titan X or R9 295x2. It will play modern games at 1080 or 1440p at Ultra settings, and should do so for several years.
