Ram chip Mixing

Solution
It does not make it unstable. It is better to get a kit and use it instead but if you add individual sticks you are just taking a risk that it does not work. What I would do if you add 2x8gb sticks of 1866 to 1 stick of 1600 is get rid of the 1600 stick. 16GB of ram is the most you will use unless you are running vms.

They will work but it will be a mess different ram speeds an make the mobo go nuts i had 8gb at 1333mhz and 8gb at 1600mhz and could use em working both at 1333 mhz for a time then the mobo started to go nuts and didnt let me even reach bios when my memory modules of different speeds were paired, you will do better if you sell and save for memory modules that are the same speed of what you have

so would it be the equivalent of running 3 8gb PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) if I used 2 PC3-14400 (DDR3-1866) and 1 PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600)? If it works at all.

To be honest pairing different ram kits that have different speeds on the same mobo can make your pc unstable in the long run in my case i could get away with it after 1 year and a half or so then the mobo started crying again lol you can do but be prepared for some headaches since the system might not even boot the bios doing something like that

Well in my case it did make it unstable but that was after some time it might be the Asus board i have since it try out to detect the memories and it had always troubles trying to run the 16gbs of different speeds, was very unstable and i was getting a lot of BOSD, then it stopped working with the 16GB of memory i had when i leaved only the 1600mhz 8gb it worked properly again

Thank you for clearing that up. From my knowledge they ether work or they don’t. Was not sure of what he meant by "unstable."
