I'm planning to build a new rig and i was pondering on a question when i was choosing a mobo.

Would a PCIE Gen2 x8 slot bottleneck a GPU?

I know it won't for the current gen GPUs but what if I'm talking bout the next gen stuff such as the upcoming AMD 300 series.

I'm hoping this mobo would last me for at least 4 years so I would like to ensure the PCIE bandwdth wouldn't be a bottleneck to my system

Solution

probably not.

no.
even the 300 series isn't going to bottleneck, because they will be PCIe 3.0 cards, like any other modern card. PCIe 4.0 is quite far, and to be clear, no modern GPU (even the Titan X believe it or not) is even close on using the full bandwidth of the 16x PCIe 3.0 slot.

The problem is I may be using an AMD AM3+ platform which the motherboard would only provide Gen2 PCIE slots. i'm just slightly worried in Crossfire if a 8x 2.0 slot would be an issue. Thanks for the fast reply btw.
