Upgrading to a GTX 960 2GB (with an i5 4590k)

I have an i5 4590k processor and a GTX 760 graphics card. I'm playing witcher 3 but I can only run it on low settings, so I want to upgrade my graphics card. Would it be worth it to get a GTX 960 2GB even though I only have an i5? I'm pretty new to computers but I've heard your parts limit each other so I wanted to check this out.

That is not a worthwhile upgrade, you will see minimal gains in terms of performance, 5-10 fps increase depending on the game.

You would be much better off upgrading to something like a GTX 970.
Your CPU is fine, it can handle any single card setup currently available.

As for the Witcher 3 on your current graphics card, make sure you disable Nvidia Hairworks, from what i've read it will cripple performance on Kepler cards.

The R9 280x is a better card than the 960 with more VRAM.
Preferably I would get a GTX970 and if I couldn't afford it I would get a 280x.
That CPU can be used with any GPU setup however so don't worry about that side of your rig.
Like Suztera asked the next big question is what PSU you have inside?

I have a 500W psu. Ideally im looking for high/ultra (but high is good enough). I just cant seem to get the game running at a smooth 60fps even on low settings. My budget is about £150/175.

If you look at his page it's Nvidias official response to the issues with Kepler and the Witcher 3. It's probably a good idea to not change your card yet.

I am also confused as to why I cant hit a stable 60fps even on low settings, any idea what might be wrong? Would it be worth starting another thread about it?

Your i5 is not the problem and it's not worth going from a 760 to a 960:

UserBenchmark: Nvidia GTX 960 vs GTX 760
Effective 3D Gaming GPU Speed: 52.8% vs 46.3%
Nvidia GTX 960 - 22nd / 487
Nvidia GTX 760 - 30th / 487

That upgrade will get you around 14% more fps whereas (assuming you want to stick with NVIDIA) a 970 is worth saving for because it's around 80% faster:

UserBenchmark: Nvidia GTX 970 vs GTX 760
Effective 3D Gaming GPU Speed: 84.7% vs 46.3%
Nvidia GTX 970 - 7th / 487
Nvidia GTX 760 - 30th / 487
