I currently have an I7 4790k and a z97-p asus mobo with 2x4gb g.skill 2400Mhz ram.

I am looking to upgrade the ram from 8gb to 16 gb but my problem is that the 4th RAM slot is faulty and whenever RAM is inserted my PC won't boot up.

So can I just buy an 8gb stick of RAM and put it in the third slot? And will the 2x4gb RAM sticks still work in dual channel? or will they all work in single channel?
Also does the 8gb stick of RAM need to have the same Mhz, latency and voltage at the 4gb sticks?

Thanks for any help given :)

Solution
You can try...never a guarantee when mixing DRAM, if you do will want6 the 2x4GB sticks in slots 1-2 and the 8GB in slot 3 to keep dual channel among all three sticks (called Flex mode)...else get a 2x8GB set and run them in 1-3
