Using my old gtx 680 as a dedicated physx card HELP!

So recently I upgraded to a 970 from my old 680. Instead of leaving the 680 in the box to gather dust I decided to use it as a dedicated physx card. So I plugged the 680 back in, installed drivers, went to nvidia control panel and switched to physx for the 680.

I did a quick test and it showed promises: in MSI kombustor physx liquid test, 970 alone got around 60fps; 970 + 680 got around 70fps. I ran Furmark for 1h and there was no issue.

However, there was a problem. I couldn't play The Witcher 3 anymore. Every time it got to the loading screen the computer would freeze. I couldn't ctrl-alt-del, alt-F4 or even reset the computer. There was a static, buzzing sound in my speakers. I had to hold down the power button to shut it down. I haven't tried other games though.

My PSU is a cooler master 1000W (I forgot the model but I bought it for like 200$ so I thought it should be decent quality right?)

Anyway, does anyone know what is happening? Any comment is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Some games just can't support this configuration, either they're too old or they're new and not implemented that feature yet. It will probably work sometime in the future, but for now, you will just have to play that particular game without it.

I can tell you that it is not The Witcher 3. What version of The Witcher 3 are you running? Latest? (v1.05 as of writing this.) Because I recently put in my old 670 (also upgraded to a 970) as a dedicated PhysX GPU and I can play the game fine. Your power supply should be plenty fine, I use a 860W myself.

Anyways don't even bother with it, there are barely any gains. I got maybe 2-5 FPS gain with Hairworks off and everything maxed. Putting me at around the 66 FPS mark dropping down to 58 FPS at times. The performance will be just as bad with Hairworks on all the way with or without the dedicated GPU. You will see that the GPU usage will only be around 2-8% in-game... This is probably an optimization issue (not really supported) as dedicated PhysX GPU's aren't as popular in configurations. You should try other PhysX games, big PhysX-use games are the Batman series and Borderlands. Even in Borderlands 2, the most I see out of my dedicated GPU is 16-20% usage.
