Hi,

Noticed a thread from this forum on upgrading a 570 to a quad core.

'Advise on CPU upgrade for inspiron 570', 13th April 2012

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/331672-28-advise-upgrade-inspiron

Has anyone actually carried this out successfully please? I think I can get hold of the necessary cpu and I have upgraded processors in the past, but I'd like some opinions on this potential upgrade before I start messing with the mobo :)

Many thanks,

KR

Today is your lucky day, I was surfing by, trying to find solution for me and saw your request.

First of all check my original thread on Inspiron 570 Uber Guide at Dell Forums. A lot of new parts came out since that time, lke GPU and PSU, RAM is more difficult to find nowdays, since it is only 1333 MHz, but still possible.

Anyway check it first, you might find all your answers there!

Good luck.

Thanks Kisianik,

Am basically ready to go ahead with the upgrade but i need the best fan/heatsink cooler I can find which will fit the Dell case, in other words, I don't want to cutomise the cpu cooling unit, I just want to replace what's already there with something better - or more efficient - that will adequately cool the new quad core.

Any suggestions gratefully received :)

Many thanks again!

In order to upgrade CPU to Phenom 965 which is 125 watt TDP vs original CPU with 65 watt or 35 watt (don't really remember). you have to change CPU cooler to the strongest possible, and the one which can fit in the original case. Check if you can find the one I promoted there, if you can find it, you can install anything in the original case, however overclock is not advised in the original case due to poor ventilation. This all also depends on your geographical location, if you live in the Northern parts of the Earth, you could be OK with lesser cooler upgrades...

Many thanks again - this gives me something to focus on - will I also need to upgrade the PSU to support the 125w processor please? Looking good! :)

PSU upgrade is preferred, especially if you are planning to install GPU. A lot of modern GPUs like GTX 760 (stronger will be bottlenecked by CPU) will fit inside, but would require PSU upgrade. CPU upgrade by itself is not necessary, unless you need I570 for some CPU heavy program and no games at all.

Aim at something around Corsair 600 watt or less, GS series are the best on low budget. Seasonic is absolute best, but costs much more.

For PSU upgrade look here[/b] and here. This one here can be useful as well, but a bit too much.

Generally all modern PSUs will fit, some more tight than others, you might have to bend a few metal clips along PSU location, which is much easier than change CPU!

I have a strong suspicion that Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition and Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition will work as well, since they were installed in XPS line at the times of Inspiron 570 production, but it is only a wild guess. If I knew this when I started my upgrade, I would definitely try this way, but now it is too late.

This is about it.

That's brilliant Kisianik, thanks :) I wouldn't need a PSU upgrade for gaming / heavy graphics because I would only be using the 570 for everyday things. Your information gives me definite items to focus on for this project.

Thanks again!

Hey you guys know that there has been a lot of new technology I want to know what's the best graphic card on that bad boy. For gaming. I have bought that ice edge fan and I want to know if I need another fan and which fan should I use I have 600 watt psu. I want to connect 2 fans on the heat sink. Which fan do you recommend.

First, I don't want to be sounding rude, please read my guide, it explains a lot of things. The beauty of ICEEDGE is in standardization, you can take any 92mm fan and use it there. If you read my guide, you will see that you need fan with 2 connectors as push fan - you can not control fan speeds with software, hardware only, so you will need to upgrade 2 fans and add another (in original case). Push CPU fan has 4 pin small connector and Exhaust fan has 3 pin connector, I don't remember if IceEdge has to connectors, but you need at least 2 fans with 2 connectors each, one for motherboard and another is Molex, this way Fan will work at 100% speed all the time, no harm done here, just a bit noisy. If you have an experience with PCs hardware, I would recommend fan controller (see the guide for examples). And you can add extra, CPU pull fan with only Molex connector. This is must be done, at least. If you live in hot climate, than you can add 2 80mm fans to the front panel (guide) to aid with air.

I went with CityNet fans, strong, but noisy. In any case, make sure that fans have bearing, not sleeves - sleeves are quieter, but last less and can be used only in vertical application.

If you want new GPU, I would recommend not to go overboard here, GTX 960 is too much, will be definately bottlenecked by your CPU, my GTX 660 is just a bit stronger than my overclocked Phenom 965 BE, so if you do not overclock, the gap will be larger and in this case GTX 750 TI, the fastest edition, will be just good for you, can not comment on GTX 950, it is too new still.

With PSU, 550-600 watt is more than enough for you, instead of higher wattage, it is better to go with quality.

Questions?

This fan will require motherboard backplate removal.

Please create a new thread and drop a link in this thread, it is at least impolite to discuss not OP related things here, someone might call it a hijack.
I will help you.
