My little brother decided to update our router firmware without being connected through Ethernet like it recommends, and right afterwards I noticed my link speed goes from 167bps to 4.2, then 0. then continues to go from 4.2 - 0 ever second. This is making it near impossible to do things like play online games and watch streams. How do I fix this?

Loading the firmware via wireless is not recommended but if it fails you would not see the symptoms you reports. Generally you get 3 things that can happen. You get the firmware to update....sound like your case. The firmware does not update and you are the same as before. The firmware partially updates and fails. In the last case you get a dead router that does not respond at all many times referred to as "bricking". Since yours at least partially works the firmware got updated.

There likely is some bug in the new firmware. You should see if you have the latest and if it is try to see if you can find a previous stable release so you can back off. You might also be able to find third party firmware like dd-wrt but it greatly depends on the brand and model of the router.

Thanks for the reply, was starting to think this would go unnoticed :p
I'll take a look at the releases, I know we have the most recent one but it might not be stable.
The brand is a D-Link DIR-628, pretty old I know haha

EDIT
I don't think it's a firmware issue, there are other devices using this network (1 TV, 2 Desktops, 3 Laptops, 4 Phones, not all at the same time) and my desktop is the only one with an issue.
