Lenovo is a great brand. I use an older Thinkpad and my friend just got a newer model and they're solid. Definitely can't go wrong with a Lenovo.

Asus, Lenovo, MSI, and Toshiba all make good brands.
The brand that I recommend to avoid is HP all together.
Dell and Acer is not a bad choice either; they have improved the past few years, especially Acer. I have seen them improved their quality on laptops, as well as desktops, but still have trouble with disc drives.
