How To Tell If Hard Drive Is Failing, Software Wise?

Hey guys, I got an old 20GB IDE Seagate U Series 5 hard drive, & I use the GNOME Disks utility in Ubuntu to check the state of my hard drive. & what categories should I worry about in the S.M.A.R.T Data & Self-Tests? The assessment says that the Disk Is OK, but the number on the Read Error Rate is huge, like in the millions somewhere, there is the UDMA Error Rate, Read Error Rate, Write Error Rate, Seek Error Rate & all these other error rate categories. Which ones should I ignore & which ones should I worry about?

I was just experimenting around with it. But on the PC I built, the UDMA error rate for my hard drive is 6. Is that bad?

There is a software called HDAT2, try it. But be careful, some of the tests might erase all information on the disk.

Try the read test first (in the "Test" menu, not "Test and fix"). If there are more than 5-6 errors, the disk is junk.

If a disk starts showing problems, it will only get worse in time.
