Hello guys,

Right now i'm using gtx 750 ti and i'm planning to upgrade my vga card shortly.

From the recent benchmark r9 290x showing better performance than gtx titanx with directx 12.
Because of that i'm really considering to get r9 290x for my mini itx system.

But right now in germany there is an instant 35 euros rebate for asus gtx 970 and i will also get the witcher 3 and the new batman game which cost around 80 euros. This rebate will end in 6th of june.

What do u guys think about that? which card is more future proof for the next 2 or 3 years maybe? Should i get the r9 290x because of that benchmark which cost more and i need to get a new sfx psu for that(right now i'm only using a 500w sfx psu from silverstone),
or should i get the gtx 970?

Or should i wait for amd r9 300 series?

I assume your cpu is capable to feed these higher end gpus.

I would not use the word future proof, but both cards are definitely good for the next 2, 3 years as they will still receive updated drivers support.

For gaming now and those exclusive titles game codes, I would definitely go for the 970. The 290x actually trade blows with the 970 depending on the titles. Plus you would not need to change the psu.

Everything about the r9 300 series is speculation at the moment. The r9 300 series is likely to replace the current 290x in its lineup. The r9 300 series promises next generation high bandwidth memory which should mean less vram usage ,less power usage and heat output for gpu. How much of this improvement is, and how does this translate to their performance remain to be seen until the launch of these cards.

Having said that, vram usage is not an issue with both the gtx 970 and the 290x, as aaa titles today will rarely use over 3GB of vram even at 4k. The arrival of the r9 300 series would only mean minor price cuts to both 970 and 290x, seeing they are already at a considerably low price point.

Since, the 290x isn't capable of the full DirectX 12 instruction set, there's one you can check off your list right there. Now the Fiji XT card is going to cost about twice as much, or more, as a GTX 970, so there's another one to check off the list. So what does that leave? GTX 980 Ti on June 2nd?

For future-proof, you can just go and buy the GTX 980 and load it up with the i7-4790K, and just play the games. If it is possible, you can go and just buy another pair and SLI it.

If you wait long enough for a new Graphics Card to release, I would certainly just go for the GTX980 and SLI. Because if I were you, I will not buy the R9-300 Series right away, because we don't know how is it going to run games and expect it to play Arkham Knight straight away in Ultra.

TL;DR : Save up and buy 2 pair of GTX 980 and SLI it.
