I went to upgrade my dell dimension 2350 with Pentium 4 (it had Celeron). I put in it without the heatsink thinking that if I can just see it work with the current bios and then throw it back together. too late ... within like 5 seconds it shutdown with the heat temp message.

To top it off I lost the original Celeron chip. I ordered another one on ebay used for 10 bucks (another Celeron).

I popped it in but the screen is blank. THe drive lights illuminated but its not doing anything. Is m motherboard cooked or did I just buy a piece of junk cpu on ebay?

Double check you had the right cpu or not, check the manual page 40 ( Intel Celeron
that runs at 1.70, 2.00, 2.10, 2.20, or 2.30 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally ). http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-2350_user%27s%20guide_en-us.pdf

Check the cpu socket of the MB ( motherboard) to see it has the burner maker or not.

If you have the right cpu and the MB does not have burner marker, clear the CMOS by the jumper, see the manual page 50. http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-2350_user%27s%20guide_en-us.pdf Then add the cpu cooler to try boot the pc again. If the pc does not boot, the problem maybe from the cpu or...

Nick Yioves,

There are a variety of possibilities. The thermal shutdown is usually quite conservative on Dells. Intel CPU's are rugged and Dells also work quickly to protect the system. It may be that the replacement Celeron did not have the thermal paste applied and heatsink set properly and the new CPU is working but overheating. If you are uprating the CPU, you might look for a Socket 478 uprated heatsink/ fan for the Dimension 2350.

I'm all for keeping the old systems going- I have a PIII Dimension XPS T700R 1998 and Dimension 8400 P4 2004 still going strong, but you might also use the opportunity to move a generation or two newer in technology . There are 1000's of Dell Optiplex and Precisions with Core2 Duo and Core2 Quad's to 3+Ghz . PCIe video cards, faster and more RAM and etc. While these used systems often need a HD or better GPU, they're not expensive and in my view a more rewarding way to invest effort and costs:

Dell Optiplex 780 Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz/4GB/160GB GE955 > $80

Dell Precision T3400 Core 2 Extreme Quad Core – 3.0 GHz WorkStation > $71

Of course, if the you like the 2350 and don't want to change, it may be worth trying a new fan / heatsink and proper thermal paste but it may be better spent on a newer, faster system.

Cheers,

If the pc does not boot, the problem maybe from the cpu or time to get the new pc.
