What is the difference? I keep getting different answers. Guy at Micro Center said no difference, and there is differing opinions on here. OEM is $30 cheaper.

If I install OEM;

- Can I still install it on a new computer someday if I remove it from older computer first?

- Can I reinstall it if I change the Motherboard someday?

Guy at micro center says Yes, but I'm not sure if he knew what he was talking about?

The retail versions of Windows allow you uninstall and reinstall the software on as many different computers as you like, as long as it is only installed on one machine at a time.

The OEM license for Windows links the software to a specific machine, so that copy cannot be legally uninstalled and moved to a different computer. Microsoft has stated changing the motherboard in a computer requires a new Windows license. The exception is if the motherboard fails and is replaced with a board of the same model. In that case, a new license is not required.

This is what I was wondering. By change motherboard, I meant replace if defective with same model motherboard. (I have replacement warranty)

As for moving to a new computer, I probably didn't need to ask that. Was more curious than anything. I expect my new rig to last 4-5 years (Until I need to upgrade again like my previous rigs). At that point, I will just get new OS for new rig and leave that OS on old rig.

Thanks for the quick response.
