Hi,

I'm in the market to upgrade my aging Seagate Barracuda 1TB drive that I use as a combination of Gaming/Media/Business, and I'm considering moving up to an enterprise class drive that has good performance, and plenty of space.

Right now I'm looking at the HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 either in 3TB/4TB SATA III

http://www.hgst.com/hard-drives/enterprise-hard-drives/enterprise-sata-drives/ultrastar-7k4000

Does anyone have any opinions on these drives for reliability and performance? or if folks have recommendations for other makes/ models I'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks

Rich

Solution
Reliability
Among the best you will get for a SATA drive. They are intended for use in servers and critical systems where reliability is essential. They are also designed to run 24-7 compared to consumer class drives which are only designed to run 6-8 hours per day.

Performance
Similar to any other 7,200RPM Sata drive. Other than benchmarks you would struggle to notice a difference compared to a barracuda.

Extra Note
Enterprise drives are usually a fair bit louder than consumer drives.

Why do you think you need an enterprise class drive? Unless you’re running a personal server that sees a lot of heavy use, total waste of money IMO.

I use WD Red drives for my media server and they run 24/7. I also keep my games on them too.

The machine has up time of about 18 hours a day, I run all my business applications on it, so the extra reliability of an enterprise class drive is a positive. I work in a computer store part time as a side job, and I see what variety of Seagate, WD (including WD Reds), and other consumer drives come back under service/warranty, so I made the decision to shift to enterprise. The side job also means I get the drives at 5% above cost, so the price is less of an issue than it otherwise might be.
