Hello, I have a serious problem with my pc. I bought a used GPU in august last year and I have not being able to use it propetly. Each time I tried to play, the pc freezed in less than a minute and it looped the last sound, making a buzz noise until hard reset. After a lot of time I had the idea of desable the integrated sound card and use an external usb sound card, and it solved the problem of the looped sound, But the computer was still freezing when playing until hard reset. The pc also freezes in the windows experience index test and in others 3D gpu tests.

My pc specs:

  • Windows 7 64Bit.
    CPU: intel core i7 3770.
    GPU: MSI radeon R9 280X.
    MOBO: MSI H61M-P31/W8.
    PSU: ezcool 800w.
8gb of ram in one stick.

Things I´ve tried:

  • Using a broze certified PSU (650w or 750w thermaltake)
Changing my MOBO (I had an ASRock H61M-vg3) i really thought it was the problem.
    Updating BIOS.
    Updating drivers.
    Using old drivers.
uninstalling and disabling intel graphics card (in windows, not in bios because I can´t find that option).
Giving my gpu to a friend for he to try it on his pc (It worked propertly).
    Changing ram slot.
    Reinstalling windows.
Checking the temps (its not a temp issue).

When i got my new mobo installed, I tried to made an experience index test without installing any driver or anything, and the pc didn´t freezed but almost at the end of the test and error apeared telling me that the test could no be completed. I was really really happy because I thought the problem was gone, and that I just had to restart the pc, install some drivers, and be able to play, but when i restarted the pc and installed the drivers and everything, i made the test again and the pc freezed. This make me think it must be a driver related issue, but maybe the pc didn´t freeze because the missing part of the test was analyzing the gpu.

I don´t know what else can i do, and this problem is getting me mad because i have spent more that 200 dollars in the gpu and trying to solve the problem, I have this gpu since more than 6 months, and I have not being able to use it and im forced to play with the integrated card.

Thanks.

Just making sure I understand things.
When you run your system without the GPU installed, everything works right? (you have tested RAM, CPU, and all the rest of the system)
When you put the GPU in another system it works right, using the same drivers you have for your system?
Only when you combine the GPU with your system, do you have a problem!

Thanks for answering.
Yes, the pc runs as it should without the gpu installed, but the gpu works on my friend's computer, but I don't know if it does with the same drivers

I would lean more towards the PSU, but you said you already tested another one?

The only thing left that it could be is the CPU and while I'm sure there could be a specific problem to cause the GPU to crash, I'm not sure what it would be.

How long did your friend test the card in his system? Did you watch him test it?

One more question, when you say it "freezes", what do you mean exactly?
Does the mouse stop moving when it freezes, requiring the hard reset?
If so, it could easily be the HDD.

I´m almost shure is not the psu.
I gave the GPU to my friend like 3 months ago, I was not with him but I´m pretty sure he tested it because I have asked him a lot of times if he really tried it, and he knows I´m wasting money trying to fix this problem. He said he tested the card on planet side 2.

And when I say it freezes I mean it totally stops responding and the screen turns black, as if i have nothing connected to my monitor, no bsod, no sound (before i disabled the integrated audio it made a buzz noise), and no mouse, because as I said it is like if i disconected my computer from the monitor.
Couldn´t it be the RAM?

I sont have SSD and I think I can´t get hardware for testing in this moment. Couldn´t it be a software/driver related issues? as I said, when I installed the new MOBO without any driver, and tested the windows experience index, it didn´t freeze but at the end of the test it gave an error, but at least it didn´t freeze. I can reinstall windows again and follow some steps (if you know any) to at least eliminate software related issues, and if the software is the problem stop wasting my money in new hardware.

Yes it could very well be a software problem. I'm not suggesting that you get new hardware. I have friends and students that swap bits when we need to track a problem down and the class has some spare parts like RAM and PSU we can swap. Hardware can be fairly easy to identify if you swap pieces out. Software is tougher.

I'm assuming that you have checked that every power feed is plugged in solidly and correctly at both ends, and everything else is fitting properly.

You do have a 'real' version of the OS?

If you reinstall the OS and drivers, strip the system down to the absolute minimum, one disk drive, no GPU, and start from there. If it doesn't go perfectly then, we need to figure out why.

The problem is that I only have one friend who has a desktop pc, and he lives far away. I know the systems runs perfectly without the GPU because I used with the integrated graphics card.
The power is propertly connected to both ends.
And if by 'real' OS you mean original then no, I don't have an original copy.

This. The forum rules specifically prohibit discussion of illegal activity which includes discussion of piracy. If that is the case then this thread will be closed for further discussion.

Before closing the thread, make sure you know what he means by "original". He could mean, the original OS that was installed on his PC.
When I read original, it didn't seem he meant "pirated". Just double check before closing. I could be wrong, just don't want to accuse someone of pirating if they aren't.

Well i´m sorry didn´t know. I meant pirated, Now I think the only thing I can do is to buy a cheap copy of windows and make the treath in a week or two. I´m lucky because my birthday was yesterday so I have a littlebit of money. Thank you all, I hope you can help me again when i get the original windows.

It's better to support the developers a buy the software you use. I really hope you buy it. It's better for you too as you'll get software updates and you won't get the random software packed with illegal copies. Keep that in your mind before pirating software.

No such thing as a cheap copy of Windows. Either you pay $99 for the OEM version or you don't get it. Anything less than the $99 version is an illegally obtained license key.
