Hey guys so a newbie question here:

Im trying to speed up my pc. That means a lot of things, hdd defragmentation, virus scans, registry cleanups, modifying startup services etc.

I have specific programs to do specific stuff, and they're pretty good at what they do. But I was just wondering, is there a right order in which I should do these things? Like I should scan first, then clean registry, then defrag? Or can I do it in any order? will the order undo the changes the previous program did?

Thanks so much in advance for your answers

First... I read that to keep Windows running optimally, you should perform a fresh reinstall every six months.

Second... You should AVOID those registry cleaners... they tend to do more harm than good. When I used them in the past I've had problems like all my shortcuts opening up different programs to the Windows Installer taking 10-30 min. to install a tiny program.

Third... To increase performance on your system you should turn OFF "real time protection" on your Anti-Virus Scanner. Most people don't really need them.. and someone using common sense would pretty much never run into any problems. What you should do is keep it set to perform scheduled scans and to run them manually once a week if you want.

Fourth... The...
With the exception of the stuff in startup, most of that stuff either won't help or is done automatically. Especially on a clean system; it's really only bloatware that leads to rubbish in the registry or startup. Windows cleans up after itself far more than it used to.

Doing a defrag both before and after could be a good idea - but it's done automatically anyway.

Fourth... The best way to speed up your computer is to install an SSD.

This is pretty dependent on how you treat your PC. From what I've seen/heard, the main issue is all the crap that gets installed - mainly the 'make your PC faster' stuff.

Definitely agree on #2 and #4. Not sure on #3, again, it comes down to how you treat your PC. My PC, fine. Some random kid who wants to torrent games and clicks on every ad promising free smilies? Not so much.
