I bought a new 2TB Toshiba HDD to store all my videos on. After I moved all my videos to that drive, whenever I play them back (using VLC) there are several bits where it turns grey and pixelated. Now I have a WD Green drive and if I copy them to that and play them they are fine.

Im just making sure but could this be a faulty drive?
Should I just get a replacement for it?

Hi there 73cn0109y,

You need to test the drive with a brand specific(or a third party one) HDD testing tool. The results should provide a S.M.A.R.T.(it will be nice if you could provide a screen) report which will show the overall health status of the drive. In case there is something wrong with it, you need to back up what is stored on it and RMA it.

Cheers,

Here is a screenshot of S.M.A.R.T. I used HD Tune Pro v5.60.

According to the results, the drive should be in good health.
After the videos run fine when transferred to your WD drive, then I guess the files are not corrupted. You can try attaching the drive to another port and use different SATA and power cables.

Apart from that, I guess you can test your WD drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool as well.
It will also not hurt to run Disk Check on both drives: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=od3X96

The WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool passed all my drives, and I ran a quick test on my WD drive and that passed. I will try switching the SATA and power cables and running disk checks on both drives tomorrow, see if that helps and get back to you.
