So, for example, if there was a Motherboard with 2 Dual Channel RAM slots, could I put a single stick in one slot, then later add a 2nd single stick in the other slot? Or does it not work like that?

Solution
Yes that will work, as i7 said, its better to get a kit, 2 at the same time to minimise the risk of incompatibility.

Also if you just get 4gb to start its going to bottleneck your rig badly, so don't get upset if you cant hit a decent framerate until you get 8gb in there.

Yes, thats exactly how it works. Although make sure you use the exact same RAM sticks, and put them in the same colour slots on your motherboard.

Which RAM are you getting? Please post the model of your motherboard and we can check if it is compatible.

(I'll get the 2nd one in a couple of months)

It's just cheap things, I blew my budget on 2 GTX 970's and an i5-4690k

I would get a kit, but because I spent nearly all my money on a 4690k and 2 GTX 970's, it would be cheaper to get 1 stick now, and another stick when I can

I'm not getting 4GB to start. I'm getting an 8GB stick to start, and then another 8GB in a few months
