I have a 760G Seagate HDD, from a 32bit XPS 400, WIN XP, and am wondering about the possibility of putting it into an 64bit Optiplex 760, WIN 7 PRO, replacing the 160G HDD that is the backup (unused) on this one.
The mobo of the XPS fried, and the 750G was being used as a backup drive, so it has some files on it that I would dearly love to access, but am not sure if it would be a PnP kind of job, or something more involved.

I can't recall for sure, whether the 750G HDD is SATA, PATA, or...?
The 2 drives on the Optiplex--I see in the BIOS--are configured as ATA...

[Of idle interest also...would it be possible (or easier) to add the 750G HDD as a 3rd drive, to the Optiplex?]

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Your 750G drive is probably SATA. As long as it is, you are looking at a plug-and-play switch. Power down, take out the old drive, plug in the new drive, power up, and everything shows up under a new drive letter in Windows.

I'm not sure how many SATA ports your Optiplex has, but if it has 3, you could easily add it as a 3rd drive if you can find space to fit it in the case. You may be able to repurpose the ESATA connection if there is one.

If the drive does turn out to be PATA (with the 40 pin ribbon connector), your best bet is to use a PATA to USB adapter/dock to recover your files.
