Hello, right now I'm living in a two story house. I do not know much about internet and wifi so I might need a step-by-step tutorial. My router is downstairs, and my room is upstairs. We use wireless internet. I use at&t U-Verse and my router model is Arris nvg589. In my room I get a ping of 22-30, I get a download speed of 6-15 Mbps, and I get an upload speed from 2-4 Mbps. This internet is way to slow for me. I game regularly and this can not keep up. I am willing to spend $50 max to make my internet faster. My Wireless Adapter is a TL-wn881nd and my Wireless Access Point is a vap2500. I hope you can help, thanks.
Is your computer far from your router?
If so I recommend a wireless wifi extender. This one is pretty cheap and worked perfectly for me:
Zyxel WRE2205
I have ATT U-Verse also and something that helped me quite a bit was changing the channel. The problem with this is that the method of doing so varies depending on what model router you have. You can look up various tutorials on changing channels, but in general what you do is:
1. On windows 7, click the start button and type cmd, then hit enter. On windows 8, press ctrl+s type cmd and hit enter.
2. Type "ipconfig" (without the quotation marks.)
3. Look for your default gateway under your wireless network adapter. (should be something like 192.xxx.x.xxx)
4. Type that number in the address bar of any web browser.
5. Look around the menus for a "change channel" option. (This varies depending on your router. Mine was in wireless options)
Something else you can try is changing your DNS. Right click on your "WiFi Button" showing the wifi signal on your computer > Open network and sharing center > Change adapter settings > Right click on your wifi adapter > Click on an option with "IPv4" in it > Properties.
From there you can change your DNS. There are different DNS' but you can use Googles if you want:
Preferred: 8.8.8.8
Alternate: 8.8.4.4
