Decrease in FPS randomly in games

Hey everyone. So, I've been having a problem while playing games on my laptop. It'll be running completely smooth and fine, and then my fps drops massively and it's difficult to even attempt to play the game. This has happened with two different games (League of Legends and RuneScape). When I go into task manager once it starts lagging, I noticed that in both cases the games roughly doubled in memory usage. I've disabled Windows Defender/Firewall and other programs that run in the background and it doesn't seem to help at all. I've updated my graphics card and that didn't help either. I also changed the graphics of both games to bare minimum and it will still occur. Any help as to why this is happening and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Computer Specs:

ASUS Q550LF
Windows 8.1 Pro
Intel i7-4500U CPU @ 1.8 GHz - 2.40GHz
8GB RAM
64-bit OS, x64-based processor
NVIDIA GeForce 745M

If I left something out that would help you understand the issue, just let me know! Thanks.

-Josh

EDIT: I used MSI AfterBurner to see what exactly was changing when the fps drop started. My CPU usage is literally the only thing that had any noticeable change... :/

Hey Jomari!

Thanks for responding so quickly.

I ran a full scan and it found nothing, and I looked at the vents and I don't see any dust. Recently I took apart my laptop to fix another issue I was having and fully cleaned it, so I don't think dust is the issue. But, it is possible that it is overheating I guess. How would I check if it is overheating or not?

I used MSI AfterBurner to check all of the different areas, including temp. And through the lag and without it, it wavered between 70 and 74. And wow, actually I didn't have my graphics card selected to be used after I last reset my laptop. That may actually be the issue. Even if it's not, thank you for bringing that up! haha.

It appears to have fixed it. Slipped my mind to ever change it. Thanks a ton! ^_^
