Set up two wireless networks from one modem

I would like to know if it is possible to set up two separate routers from one modem. I rent a room and the owner of the house has a modem/router combo from AT&T. I would like to set up my own router with my own network so I can run a wireless HDD and do my own streaming without the owner being able to see my data. I think I could figure out how to set it up using a splitter if there was a separate modem but I'm not sure how it would work since the modem is built into the router. Can I connect another router into one of the ethernet ports on the combo unit? Are there any settings I need to change for the IP address? I would really like to know because getting a separate modem and router is not possible and I don't want to use the current network since the owner could see everything on my WiFi HDD. If anyone has any other suggestions on how I could get around this, they are welcome. Thank you

Well, adding a second router is simple, but as all your data will still be running through their router, the owner would still be able to see all your network traffic, were they so inclined. If you don't want them to see your data, you would have to split the signal before it reaches their router, which means you will need your own modem\router; as well, ATT will know you are doing this and will almost certainly charge additional for it (though you can check with them of course).

This may be moot, but also, ensure that media sharing is turned-off on all user accounts on that computer, I am not at all familiar with Wi-fi hard-drives, but I would guess that there is some control over who has access to the actual hard drive, via a program by the hard drive manufacturer.
