Hey, I am currently looking for some new components to fit into my computer. I want to be able to do light ish (6-8 tracks) of video editing, and some light gaming.

My current PC specs are:
- Intel i5 4440 Quad Core @ 3.1GHz
- AMD Radeon 6670 Graphics card
- 120GB SSD
- 1TB HDD
- Gigabyte H81M-S2PV Motherboard
- 620W PSU
- Coolermaster Hyper 103 CPU Cooler

These specs just aren't powerful enough, as I get a lot of lag when editing, and a 10 minute clip can take 1 hour + to render.
I have around £600 to spend on upgrades for my new PC

I have been looking at :
- I7 4790K CPU - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-Socket-LGA-...
- GTX 960 GPU - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-Nvidia-Windforce-PCI-E...

I am not sure if I would need a new PSU so please tell me if my upgrade would need me to get a new one.

Also in the budget, I need to buy a new piece of editing software. I was thinking about Sony's movie studio, but I'm not sure if that would be to basic or have enough features? (I need to be able to cut videos, add transitions, create text, output 720p videos)
Link: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiopp

I have currently been using lightworks to edit videos, however this does not have all of the features that I need to use when editing videos.

So, to sum up...
- What components do I need too improve my computer/Are the components that I picked OK?
- Do I need a new PSU?
- Is Movie studio OK for what I need to use it for?

Thank you in advance for your help.
Tom

the newer 960 is a power sipping card it will be fine. the i7 will be a little faster then the cpu you have now.myself i upgrade the gpu now and then wait for skylake when you have the funds. when skylake comes out it will be faster then the cpu you have now for about the same price. with sony you can download there software and try it for a time to see if you like it. a lot of video editing speed depends on the gpu too and the cpu. your cpu is quite new and should still be fine. make sure with the new gpu you have 8g of ram min. the more ram the better it is for video editing software.

The componentes you picked are ok, but if you are getting an unlocked CPU you need a Z97 motherboard, if you don't want to overclock just get the regular 4790.
Can you tell us more about your PSU? A 620W PSU should be enough if it's not a cheap non-branded model.

Thanks for your responce!
The PSU is an ACE A620... I hope this helps, as it is the only information given about it.

Thanks for your responce! I am definitely going to try the software, I didn't realise you could!
Is the 8GB of RAM the system RAM, or the graphics card RAM?
Thanks, Tom

I need to be able to cut videos, add transitions, create text which is set to a certain onscreen position (I.e when a camera is panning, the text will remain in one place on the footage ie being stuck to a wall). I also need to be able to output 720p to 1080p videos and I need to be able to edit between 6-8 tracks in one project.

Adobe Premiere Pro is a professional video editing software that will do most of those easily. As far as sticking text onto walls etc goes Premiere has motion tracking which allows you to track a certain object in your video and attach shapes, titles etc to that object (as far as sticking stuff to walls in particular I'd say you might want to use the planar tracker in Adobe After Effects as I'm not sure how well Premiere does in that regard. Premiere has excellent integration with After Effects however).

Someone mentioned Sony Vegas earlier in the thread and that's certainly an option as well. I believe comes bundled with Mocha planar tracking as well (for sticking stuff on walls) so unlike with Premiere you might not have to go to After Effects to get this done properly. Personally I've never used Sony Vegas however, but it's generally well regarded I believe.

There are also other programs like Avid Media Composer that will get the job done, but it comes at a higher price point.
It might also be that there are some non-professional programs as well that are capable of doing what you're asking for.

What program to get also depends on your budget, how much you will use it etc.

Thanks for your help! I will definitely check out After Effects and Sony Vegas!

Sony Vegas and After Effects are definitely SOLID video editors!
