I've built this to run silently for my audio production setup at home. Soundcard is external, monitors are as expensive as this build, and I use my Samsung UE40F5005 tv for display. It's 1080p, 60Hz refreshrate, and 28ms LBT. I also use it with the PS3/4 where I do most of my gaming. I would however like to get some gaming out of this PC-build aswell, without compromising on the silence. This is what I came up with:

Case: Fractal Design Define R5
Motherboard: ASUS Z97-Pro (w/WiFi)
CPU: Intel LGA1150 Core i7-4790K
CPU-cooler: Noctua NH-D15
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 750 2GB DirectCU Silent
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1866MHz 2x8 16GB
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
PSU: Super Flower Golden Silent 500W

I'm interested to know if my PSU will handle this build.

Also, how my GPU would work with my display.

I will probably overclock the CPU and RAM a bit, just because I can, but I am weary of heat.

I suspect I will only be able to use one fan on the cooler because of my RAM, but hope it will be sufficient.

My R5 is without a window, so aesthetics are not a concern!

Finally I have read here that more input than output of air is important to keep out dust, especially with a silent running PSU, so I'm probably going for two intakes at the front and one at the back for good airflow.

All comment are greatly appreciated!

Thanks

that is correct it is part of their twinzfrozr technology, makes them one of the most silent gpus in market. it runs no fans untill needed, it has a stable temp on idle. You can override it easily if it bothers you. But, it is a great bonus to...

remember to control your fans to make it silent, would also reccomend getting sound proofing material: scan or overclockers easy to get that stuff if your from UK, dunno about US ... but amazon does that. Here's a link to consider: http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/cases/computer-pc-case-sound-proofing. May not need to, but sound bothers me too, because of playing when gf is asleep

You need to provide the overall cost at least.

Case: Fractal Design Define R5
Motherboard: ASUS Z97-Pro (w/WiFi) <----- See http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-intel-amd-motherboard,3902.html
CPU: Intel LGA1150 Core i7-4790K <----- CPU is too big
CPU-cooler: Noctua NH-D15
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 750 2GB DirectCU Silent <----- GPU is too small
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1866MHz 2x8 16GB
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB <---- geta 250gb and a 1tb hdd
PSU: Super Flower Golden Silent 500W <--- what model? See http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html#xtor=EPR-8886

You'd be better off getting an i5 4460 and a R9 270X - smaller CPU and bigger GPU.

Thanks for that. The R5 has some soundproofing material built into all it's sides, so I was hoping that would be enough. It also has a 3-speed fan controller intergrated.. The R5 is what I'm most pleased with, from all the reviews I've read!

Yes but I need my GPU to be passive. And I want my CPU to last for many years, so I don't mind paying for the i7. And cost is not the overall concern here. I want compatibility and longevity.

The overall cost is at about $1,500, but keep in mind that shopping for parts here in Norway is about 10-15% more expensive, piece by piece, than in the US.

It's a nice case. But you need to balance what you buy amongst your budget.

This would game better -

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($176.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($81.89 @ OutletPC)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($56.89 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($48.75 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 270X 2GB HAWK Video Card ($143.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($58.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($85.75 @ OutletPC)
Total: $703.23

okay thats great then minus, i didn't check my bad, well best of luck with it. Look at i7gamer's reply good reply there.
your 750 is going to be bottlenecked so bad by your i7 4790k. Would consider upgrading to 970 if you can afford it. Your 750 will be outdated fast. Also, you can get some very quiet 970's, MSI especially, got 2 of these work a charm.

Say if you could get the equivalent of a $1000 build, you could get -

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($325.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($26.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($120.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($61.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive ($73.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card ($201.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Cooler Master Storm Trooper ATX Full Tower Case ($144.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: Antec High Current Gamer 520W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($58.98 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: LG GH24NS95 DVD/CD Writer ($19.69 @ OutletPC)
Total: $1035.56

^ This ^ is a good idea for gaming, and should still provide good performance for audio mixing/editing. i7 + 750 is off balance, high end CPU, low end GPU. i5 + R9 270 is a better balance.

Okay, I read about the MSI 970's that didnt start using the fan until at temp of 60c. Would it do much good on my display though?

But right now, it is the best price to power ratio gpu on the market. I mean ... just look at that: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-970-vs-GeForce-GTX-750 absolutely destroys it, will cost you alot more, but pointless having i7 if no supplementary gpu .

Thanks, I have now cancelled the Gtx750. I have found the MSI 970 at only double of what i was about to pay for the Gtx750, so it seems fair.

And the PSU will deal with it along with an overclocked system?

should do. if you are overclocking alot, consider upgrading to 650w. 500w should be good to run under full load ... but no point upgrading 550w because 650w gives you more room to upgrade other components later.
on one of my systems i am running overclocked fx 8350 at 4.8ghz ... alot higher power consumption then i7. cpu watercooling. fan controller. 4 fans. msi gtx 970, 2 hdds, 1ssd, wireless card, 4x 8gb 1866mhz ram, and that is on 650watts. Better to be safe then sorry, 650watt shouldn't be too much more then a 500w, try go with a known psu company instead of risking wrecking your components ;)

update: ill give u few names: corsair, antec, evga ... cannot go wrong with them. brilliant manufacturers.

I was looking at the corsair rm750, and seasonic silent 460. But the corsair were reported to have noisy fans in the long run, and seasonic had annoying coil whines. Then the super flower golden silent 500w just crushed every review. And claims to perform well at 600w even. The over power protection stops it at 750w. It looks cheaply packaged, but it is very well built with a massive heatsink. I think I will stick with it.

Also, I have a 1tb external hd for general storage.

Update: Super Flower provide essential components for Evga, amongst others. I'm pretty sure Super Flower is underrated.

okk you did your research, i didn't check any reviews on it, but the rest seems good :) if you want a quieter system, the Noctua NH-D15 is like £65 right .... change to water coolnig for your cpu, £65 for a corsair hydro h75 AIO cpu water cooler. Your system will be even more quieter ... and your cpu will be really cool and overclock your cpu even more :p ... plus saves u cleaning your heatsink and fan

+1 although the Noctua NH-D15 is a great cooler in my opinion!

I mean of course it's amazing what it does, but i prefer an AIO cpu water cooler instead a heap of metal and fan :p depends what you prefer :p

Once I realized water coolers could leak I abandoned the idea all together. And Noctua just looks pure class. And it's Austrian. What has Austria ever done wrong?
