Hi everyone! I just got myself a new AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics card and had to download the newest drivers. But when trying to use the install wizard an error message keeped popping op, saying, "Encountered an improper argument". I am literally completely unable to install the graphics drivers I need and am desperately in need of help : (

Solution
and you followed these steps under windows 7 ??

http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx#Win7

http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/catalyst-windows-install.aspx#7

and got your driver from here using the'' Manually Select Your Driver ''??

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download#

and that gives you this ??

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows%207%20-%2064

and you used the 14.12 and not the beta one ???

I some time recommend this one as well to try out to see if its the newer driver in some way

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous/detail?os=Windows%207%20-%2064&rev=13.12

it don't hurt to review the drivers release notes to check on changes...

did it before already, didn't help :(

More information about you situation would be useful if you want help then. Does the card display outside the windows environment?

Have tried one of the portable Linux distros to see if it's able to work there?

Does it work during the POST and BIOS phases?

Is it simply that the drivers won't install?

Are ALL the supplementary power cables connected to the card?

Reseated the card?

Monitor connected to the card and not the motherboard?

Some of these might not even apply, but without knowing your actual situation, it's rather like shooting in the dark.

if you google '' Encountered an improper argument windows 7 '' you don't see any thing about amd drivers or any drivers [not to say it cant be ]

but a lot of this type thing from outher programs

The Corel Draw Encountered An Improper Argument error may be caused by windows system files damage. The corrupted system files entries can be a real threat to the well being of your computer.

There can be many events which may have resulted in the system files errors. An incomplete installation, an incomplete uninstall, improper deletion of applications or hardware. It can also be caused if your computer is recovered from a virus or adware/spyware attack or by an improper shutdown of the computer. All the above actives may result in the deletion or corruption of the entries in the windows system files. This corrupted system file will lead to the missing and wrongly linked information and files needed for the proper working of the application.

maybe run a sfc/scannow and see what pops up ?

I don't guess I ever had this thing come up for me , and did find it funny how ever I google it- its mostly sites that talk it up with programs like the on I '' '' above even when I used amd or NVidia driver and Encountered an improper argument nothing that folks experienced it with them ????

Yes, the card displays, and yes i plugged thé cable into the card, not the motherboard. I even managed installing drivers in the meantime,, it's just that there is a black border around my screen now. I know how to fix this, but i need Catalyst Control Center for that, which i can't install because i keep getting error messages from the installation wizard :/ (I ínstalled the drivers using device-manager)

Thanks, I will look into that.

your monitor may have that overscan adj.?? but I don't know is this a new card thats replaced a old card or a fresh install of a new card

and exactly how did you uninstall the old cards driver ?? the only thing about all this is that error you get in all my years I never came across it and my research on it been kinda fruitless

matter of fact just with all the vid card driver stuff I see here at toms I don't remember seeing that as well

also whats you system specs ??? and what os . and what driver number [14.4 -13.12 ???]

I also don't find this in relation to CCC, and I suspect it may actually have to do with something else on the system, which I why I suggested doing a clean install of the OS. This is clearly a system or application related problem, that I can see, and I think a clean install followed by installation of all the necessary drivers and utilities prior to installing any applications might resolve the issue.

heres something I was also looking at and why I wanted system specs -- amd drivers over 13.12 don't show support for vista or xp 13.12 being the latest - so I wonder if he has vista or xp and forced the newer say 14.12 driver in and it changed the vista or xp files to a unsupported file and now looks at them and busts ??

amd and there support on stuff is why I moved from vista to 7 and as soon as this last amd card bits the dust there done around here I cant trust them to support my needs anymore I don't need to be using them [NVidia latest driver still supports vista but not XP for the 900 cards [ •No certified downloads were found for this configuration ] but will 700 and below cards [xp]

anyway it was just something else I was looking at on this -- maybe a unsupported driver on a unsupported os ??

Firstly, I'd like to thank both of you, junkeymonkey and darkbreeze for keeping your patience with a tech-newbie like me ^^ Secondly, I just wanted to say that, while I still haven't found a way to get rid of that weird error message, I disabled the underscan over the registry editor and can now finally enjoy a full screen, thanks to the instructions found on this page:

http://blog.galets.net/2013/02/fix-hdmi-overscan-without-catalyst.html

As far as I'm concerned my problem is solved, thank you both for your willingness to help anyway!

I'm using Windows 7 Professional, and I would call the setup of my computer fairly normal, maybe just a bit more high-end than average, so I really dont know what could cause this exotic error. Anyway, while I haven't necessarily solved my problem, I found away around it that satisfies me. Still, thanks for your effort!

it don't hurt to review the drivers release notes to check on changes or known issues that may affect your system
