MSI z97 gaming 5 on board sound or sound card.

Solution
On board sound is plenty good unless you have high end headphones. If you have a headset that cost >$100, or headphones >$40 (and not Beats) you would see some benefit from a soundcard, but more benefit from an external USB DAC. All of this is provided you actually pay attention to your audio in detail.

I like Schiit as a brand for audio equipment.

Personally I think you'd be fine plugging them into a potato.

Stick with the motherboard sound, Beats are just a fashion accessory, not real headphones. Their emphasis on Bass completely blows out the mids and highs. Additionally earphones are not capable of truly high end sound reproduction.
