i just downloaded my os on a ssd and am currently using a hdd as storage. when i try to use programs on my hdd they don't work and when i transfer them over to my sdd i get errors such as missing dll files. also on steam it says none of my games are installed when i have them on my hdd.

Solution

You need to reinstall those applications. The new OS does not know anything about them, nor do they know...
1. You have to "install" the OS on the SSD, downloading an OS won't function

2. I'm guessing that you had Windows on ya HD at some point, if my guess is correct, you will need to reinstall them over themselves to set up registry ... you might just wanna wipe the HD and start anew.

Yes. You need to reinstall your applications with the new OS. Either on the SSD or on the HDD. But they do need to be reinstalled.

Steam games can be fixed, probably.

can i clone individual programs?

thats because your stuff is INSTALLED on a different OS.

since your games are mostly steam games, i'd simply redownload them. you can set the default download location in the steam client to a folder on the hard drive. should fix you up after everything downloads.

No.
It's not just the existence of the dll files, it is also where they are.
Reinstall the applications.

It most likely scans the registry and then checks to make sure that all DLLs listed in the registry can be found on your system. How would it know what DLLs are required if the programs are not installed and the registry keys are missing?

The only solutions are:

1. Clone the HDD to the SSD;
2. Re-install all programs (Steam may not require a re-installation of all games).

You need to reinstall those applications. The new OS does not know anything about them, nor do they know anything about the new OS location.

C drive, D drive, E drive.....they are looking for things in the wrong places.
Reinstall.

Solution
The site most likely is safe, but both USAFRet and myself are convinced that it won't work. The DLLs already are on the HDD, but registry entries are missing. Most DLLs need to be registered and that process occurs while you install the application. You could try registering the DLLs manually using C:\Windows\SysWOW64\regsvr32.exe, but that may not work for all applications.

When you install a program over itself, it does 3 things:

1. Installs all missing dll's

2. Makes all appropriate registry entries.

3. Retains all upgraded files, customizations, toolbars, etc. that you have made. It will not overwrite and files that are newer than the on the install media.
