Hi there,

I’m a gamer, my last new build was like in 2006 (!!) , winXP, but it was updated around 2009-2010 (vid card), and ever since 2012, I’m playing on a high-end (at the time) macbook pro, which is now showing signs of deep fatigue …

I’ve spent a lot of time here and elsewhere to come up with a high-end build that needs to last for at least 5 years, possibly with a vid card update within 3 years.
I’m playing mostly FPSs, RPGs, and other games and intend them on max settings if possible on my TV. I also plan to play games like Planetary Annihilation, which requires tons of RAM.

So, this is a gaming build (exclusively), mini-ITX, with maxed out overclocking, under the TV, and ultimately meant to be SteamOS, possibly with a Win7 interim period. I already know Z97-based MB are supported by SteamOS, today.
Budget is around 2000 E (yes, that’s a lot, but WTH, I'm a gamer !).

Here goes:

  • MB: Asus Maximus VII Impact
    RAM: Trident X, 2 X 8 Go, 2400 MHz, CAS 10
    CPU: i5-4690K or i7-4790K
    Case: Thermaltake Core V1
PSU: Corsair HX850i (yes I know it’s overkill for the build, it’s intended for the GPU refresh)
GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 970 DirectCU Mini
    CPU cooler: ?
    HD: Seagate Desktop SSHD, 2To

What are you guys' opinions on this ? I know i5 is favored vs. i7 on any gaming build, based on no hyperthreading on any current game, but what about within the next 5 years ? Would the future be worth the 100 E more i7 is vs. i5 ? I honestly don't plan any CPU upgrade ...
As for CPU cooler (liquid), I'm still struggling to find one I know for sure fits the case ... Any thoughts welcome.

Solution
Essentially no game utilizes hyper-threading which is what an i7 is offering. Essentially no game utilizes more than four cores at this moment. If you want to overclock get a i5-4690K with a Z97 board, the Maximus is a good choice. An i5 will be absolutely ideal for your purposes. The PSU is a Seasonic so no complaint there. CPU-cooler I would advice for the NH-D15 from Noctua. Beautiful, quiet and awesome performance. The 970 is an amazing card, I own two STRIX myself and have had a really good experience.

By the way, get an SSD with a minimum of 250G. Get the Samsung EVO-series. Install OS and games on it. Use the Seagate for storage.

Solution
i7's do have an edge over i5's in gaming or pretty much any other apps or programs. You will be more than OK with an i5 though. If you can afford it, future proofing your self some won't hurt. There are already a lot of multithreade games out there. FarCry 3 & 4 for example.

Finding a cooler that will fit that case for sure might be a head ache for a while.

Thanks to all for your inputs.

I will probably indeed downgrade the PSU, probably put an SSD and see where I end up with, to see if the very expensive 980 fits.
And yes, I'm struggling for the cooler :)

EDIT: bizarrely enough, there's no other platinium PSU less expensive on the site I plan to buy from. The 850i is 199 E and every other platinium, even 600 W are more, so I'll stick to the 850i.
As for the cooler, I'll probably go Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2, which is more or less the only one you can fit in this case.

If your wanting to spend around 2 grand which is avg to get a pretty good system then here goes.

Intel Core i7 5930K £455.00
16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black, PC4-22400 (2800) £130.10
500GB Samsung 850 EVO, 2.5" SSD,£147.42

MSI X99S GAMING 7, X99, S 2011-3, DDR4, SATA III 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, PCIe 3.0 (x16), ATX + Free DRAGON WATER COOLER 120mm
£191.96
6GB MSI GTX 980Ti GAMING 6G Twin Frozr 5,£599.98

then power supply no need for more than 750W Gold £80
normal hard drive 2TB is £50
Blu Ray RW Drive £50
and case of choice. all coming in minus the case for about £1700
Then you will not only have a CPU to run a good few years but a GPU as well

If you arent looking to buy until august then wait til the end for new Skylake Intel CPU
and 980TI could easily go to GTX970 or 980. the 970 only running good FPS on 1080p for next year.

but dont go spending out on out dated Tech and if your going for high ram then DDR4 has dropped so much that 130 quid for 16GB is a no brainer.

Happy Hunting
