Hello,

So I have everything on my PC installed to this 1 TB HDD and my 120 GB ssd. I want to improve the speed of my system as a whole by installing the os onto my SSD. Do I need to wipe the 1 TB HDD upon choosing my SSD to install the OS on? Would it automatically wipe it? Is there any way I can keep the data that is on that drive? Could I clone everything on the HDD except the OS onto another HDD and just simply put it into my system along with the SSD as my boot drive?

Solution

It completely depends on what you want to keep, and what you can reinstall.
If you have a...

1. How much used space is on your current drive? I'm guessing more than 100GB. So cloning is out.

2. So, a clean install on the new SSD.
Disconnect all drives except the SSD
Install.
After all is working, then connect the old HDD.
Your 'data' can be copied around as needed. Data = doc/music/video.
Your applications will need to be reinstalled.

Yeah, way over 100GB xD. So I would need to delete then reinstall all of my applications? but I retain everything else like docs and stuffs? If so then I should just wipe it and start fresh then? because I have pretty much no music and pics, and a few stray docs that i can save to usb flash

It completely depends on what you want to keep, and what you can reinstall.
If you have a place to put all your personal files (Doc/music/etc) great. Do that.

What takes up the rest of the space? Games, applications? A combination of both?

For Steam games (and Origin), create a new top level folder. Call it MyGames
Find the steamapps folder int he current installation.
Move that entire steamapps folder to that new location.

Then proceed with the install on the SSD
Install with only the SSD connected.
Once it is all up and running, and you have installed the Steam client with the new OS....
In the client you can designate that folder you created as a location for Steam games.
When you run one for the first time, it should pick it up and run no problem.

All other applications will need to be reinstalled. Most will actually fit on the SSD no problem.
