Computer freezes frequently when playing GPU heavy games (Just Cause 2, Fallout: New Vegas, War Thunder)

When I'm playing any newer 3D games (I.E., anything more graphically taxing than Half-Life 1) I get frequent freezing. Not just the game, my entire PC. The mouse won't move, alt-tab and ctrl-alt-delete don't work, and I'm just stuck waiting there for 30~ seconds. What will happen is the game, seemingly at random for some titles but under heavy loading for others, will freeze, the music and any currently playing sounds will skip (at around 1/4 sec. intervals). When the freeze is nearly over (usually about 10-12 seconds before unfreeze) the sound will skip at a much faster rate for about 2 seconds, then a few more seconds later, the PC unfreezes. Any alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete commands I tried to carry out during the freeze will now go into action.

Sometimes this happens without warning, but sometimes (usually after the first freeze per game session) it will be telegraphed by ambient sound skipping. It's the weirdest thing, the game itself will function just fine, and any "triggered" sound effects (footsteps, gunshots) will play just fine, it's just the ambient noise and the music that starts to skip. At this point, I know I have about 7-10 seconds (although I haven't timed it) before another freeze. If I try to alt-tab out of the game, or exit to a menu, the freeze happens anyway.

My graphics card drivers are up to date.

I did a scan for malware and did find some, but after I'd cleared it out, the issue persisted. I'm going to do a full scan with no other programs running (probably with Malwarebytes but maybe Avast, I don't know if it matters) before I go to bed tonight.

I'm going to clean my fans soon, I just need some compressed air and advice, but I know who to ask. It's going to happen soon.

Here's my DxDiag.txt.

Thanks for helping ^^

Ugh I hate issues like this because it could be so many things..

When (if ever) was the the last time the CPU cooler was removed from the CPU? Last time it was built? If so, when was this?

Does the computer get loud before the crash?

Download MSI After Burner (http://www.guru3d.com/files-get/msi-afterburner-beta-download,26.html) and Core Temp (http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/)

So start both programs up, play whatever you play, and then when it freezes, close the game if you can. (I got the impression that you could..?)

If you can, look and note the temperature of the GPU (found on the right of MSI afterburner. The label for the graph is ABOVE the chart thing and NOT below it.)

And then for the CPU, tell me all the different core temps :)

That would help a lot in solving this.

The CPU cooler has never been removed from the CPU... this was a prebuilt tower that I put a new GPU into. It was like 3 years ago, I was even more of an inexperienced newbie then than I am now.

My computer is loud when playing games in general, but I'll pay attention and see if it gets louder, then get back to you.

I can't close the game while the freeze is going on... but I'll see if Afterburner and Core Temp keep recent history and see if I can deduce it from there.

It's been happening since March or April. It's pretty much stayed the same as far as I know, the problem has kinda made me avoid the demanding games that cause the issue.

So I am thinking that you need new thermal paste for your CPU cooler.. This is a common issue after about 3-5 years of having a computer. It costs about $5 and takes about 10 seconds depending on your cooler. It could take a lot longer if it is a stupid case (which is probably is knowing prebuilts)

Do you have any computer stores in your area? Any of these?

Fry's
NCIX
Mac Mall
New Egg
Micro Center
SuperBiiz
Tiger Direct (Might not be possible anymore)

Any store like that?

If not then I think Best Buy will probably have some thermal paste. (Or Thermal Compound)

I'll give it a go. I can't drive myself, but I'm going out tomorrow with someone else, so I'll pick up some thermal compound then. I've delt with this case a few times to upgrade the GPU, it's pretty tollerable.

Alright. I'll just pick up some compressed air while I'm in the neighborhood. Who knows, it really might just be dog hair or dust in the fans.

Oh, by the way, I booted up Just Cause 2 and spazzed the camera around and junk. I tried to set up a freeze, and it happened (not that I need to, Just Cause 2 has the worst record with them). Here's a screenshot.

That spike in GPU usage (and much smaller spike in tempature) is from the freeze. I'm aware that it was kinda stupid to bury the second window under Afterburner and Task Manager, and when I tried to pull it back up for another screen shot, it just closed (._. ) if I recall, the max-tematures were all around the 64C-64C-68C area.

Oh christ, I accidentially selected that as the best answer through email -.-

No, but the PC froze. So I suppose the program wans't recording.

afraid not. Alt-tabbing after the fact is the best shot I have.

Also, my dad seems staunchly opposed to getting the thermal paste for some reason. I still don't have the compressed air, should have it tomorrow. I swear if that turns out to be the solution I'll be kicking myself.

Is there anything else you would suggest trying for the time being?

Ehh. this isn't something that is going to go away with a can of air but it's worth a shot. (No pun intended) I suppose just bring it to a shop so that the guy can tell you it is the CPU Cooler. (Which it won't be but that's how they make money, right?)

Anyways, I guess you don't have much of a choice now. :(

You could reinstall windows and see if that helps. But that would be a massive shot in the dark, and a massive pain in the ass. You would have to back up all your wanted files, get a bootable USB stick or windows DVD, then once it's installed, you would have to reinstall all programs, drivers etc.. And honestly, not unless it is a virus, I don't think that will help.

Yeesh. I think I'm gonna try another virus scan or something first <.< and cross my fingers and hope to god that it's a weird overheating issue.

I may just downgrade my GPU. I've had buckets of problems since I installed the AMD Radeon 7700 :/ lets me play a lot of stuff but god damn so many problems.

Is it bad if I don't know what this is?

Oh, I googled it, Power supply.

...you know that is probably my problem. When I got this new GPU, it had two inlets for power supply (pardon if I get the terminology wrong here. I dunno what this stuff is called.) The card heavily advertized it's overclocking capability, and it worked with only one plugged in, so I figured that the second one was for overclocking.

What this doesn't explain is why it worked for so long. I bought this one with money I got for Christmas, and this freezing problem is maybe a month old now.

I need a new Power Supply then. I would have plugged them both in, but I only had one PSU outlet.

I don't really recall, maybe 7? Ish? It doesn't matter, the problem was that the GPU had two separate wires to power it, and my power supply only had one available. My last card didn't even need to be supplied from the PSU.

That said, this issue and a number of other ones (the primary one being that I can't fit a card good enough to run Fallout 4 in this case) has compelled me to build a new tower anyway. I've had this pre-built for like... 5 years now. It's time for an upgrade.

Thanks a LOT for your time though! I guess the solution turned out to be pretty silly in the end, but hey. Hope this helps someone. If you're here because you Googled it like I did, check your power supply. That might be it or might not, I don't know, just be safe.

Do you want me to help you with picking parts for a new build? If you do, make a new thread and them send me a message with the link. If you would like to buy a prebuilt then you could ask me what I think of it too.

And by the way, they do make mini GPUs that are powerful. These are two:

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvn960ixoc2gd
https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp42962kr

But I think it might be time for a new tower anyway.. A new CPU especially if that computer is that old.

Glad I could help! :)
